Having seen Nationwide mentioned for insurance in another thread I thought I would check this one out. I gave the their insurance number a call & they were quite clear that boating on your own boat was not covered at all.

Only a commercial cruise was covered. Their is also a manual work get out, so even if it was covered you would invalidate the cover by applying a coat of varnish say.

On another tack I have noticed another clause in some policies which says that cover for yachting (usually within 12/20nm of the coast) & other activities are only covered as long as "The activity is not the sole purpose of the trip". So if you go to your boat & have no other accommodation etc their is no cover. This condition has just been applied on my RBS Black Mastercard cover & I have seen it elsewhere - BEWARE

What sort of insurance are we talking about - it isn't clear? Personal accident? Health? Liability? Life? Personal Possessions?

Quite normal for basic holiday insurance which is aimed at people taking their annual package holiday, or at least using conventional transport and accommodation. If you want to insure against other risks you need to take out specialist insurance.

I am particularly talking Medical, but the examples I quoted apply to travel insurance packages included with accounts or card. Up to now I have been fully covered up to 20 miles offshore with my card packaged cover & no upper age limit which, is particularly good, it's the change in wording to "The activity is not the sole purpose of the trip" that now excludes me. I will probably go for the Bishop Skinner travel cover although this is going to be much more expensive.

Just a heads up really as someone could find their cover is not what they thought which could be really nasty for them.

Indeed - I was the OP of that thread so thanks for the "heads up". Shows how important it is to read the small print. Have now reinstated original cover.

It was interesting that the small print did not make this clear at any point, which is why I rang. I questioned this & the answer was it would make the policy document too large if they specified everything. Once again it shows how the insurance companies leave it up to us to figure out when to ask them for clarification.

Luckily for me my original cover is valid for trips already booked. As I have booked all my travel to France for this year I am ok till 2014 when it is just as likely things will change again. They accepted that I could go skiing for 31 days & have full cover but not sit in the sun on my flybridge, I guess the policy writers only do skiing & golf lol.

I claimed on the Nationwide free travel insurance for the loss of a night in a hotel that I'd paid for but couldn't take due to the death of my mother in law. The insurance company presented unreasonable conditions as they would not accept the death certificate, they wanted a letter from her GP to say she was ill, the GP would charge for the letter and it would have been at my cost. They also applied a £50 excess for both myself and my wife so after many months, a few letters and phone calls they eventually paid £40 of the £140 claim.
I'm not sure if other 'free' insurance offers on other cards operate the same way but I'll be very wary in future.

Pantaenius do a specific policy for "Mariners Classic Annual Multi Trip" for up to a maximum of 120 days at a time. I just renewed ours today at £279.77 for both of us for world wide cover for up to 120 days one trip for 12 months. It would have been £239.80 for up to 90 days. You have to apply online but if you get stuck and phone them in Plymouth they are extremely helpful.

Natwest travel insurance included in a bank account excludes any problem occuring whilst using equipment (equipment is not defined). Pointing out that a pencil is equipment for a writer gets you nowhere. The insurance is TOTALLY useless and probably a fraud, but too expensive to challenge.

Ive just phoned insure and go and they say they will insure me when im out on my boat as long as its a holiday and not as
a full time livaaboard, which is fair enough.
i told them its for 30 days this trip and they were fine with that.

We've been with Insure and Go for several years, covered for 9/12 on long stay policy at around £170 for both. Problem this year as I am now 66 - they will only cover for 100 days max per trip which is useless for us. After receiving other quotes, have decisded not to insure.
