am i the only one who has to keep replacing the masthead unit on the NASA clipper wind speed unit ? i have had 2 complete systems ,2 replacement cups , and 1 new masthead unit ! or are they just rubbish ? i have just dropped the mast to find the shaft is seized in the housing and the new unit was fitted may 06 !

No, you are not the only one by any means. By far NASA's worse instrument. When you say the shaft is seized do you mean the weather vane or cups shaft? The cups sit on a pin rigidly fixed in the unit and contain a magnet which interacts with an internal sensor as they rotate.
I gave up on the thing and use a suitably wetted finger instead.

You have done well if your unit lasted that long! Mine would pack up after exeriencing any windspeed over around 50kts. If the summer was fine, the cups dropped off anyway after about three months through UV degredation.

You would have thought NASA would by now have got wise and developed a more durable unit - thoughts of 'unfit for Purpose' under the Sale of Goods Act comes to mind.
