My five year old Nasa wind instrument appears to have started to under read by about fifty percent.

Last year the wind vane started to stick in very light winds but this has now cured itself. Apart from that it has been reliable and no problem.

Before I remove it and send it to Nasa to be checked has anyone experienced a similar problem and how was it fixed?

Probably dirt around the cups' bearing. If your mast is down, I'd try flushing with water (or water plus detergent if possible). It nbecopmes a l;ittle more difficult if you've got to go to the masthead to do it...

I had this problem too! Went to the masthead and squirted WD 40 on to the spindle. Did the trick. O.K. since. Excellent piece of kit!

Thanks for the advice. I think it will have to be water to start with as I understand the assembly is made from ABS plastic which is susceptible to cracking when sprayed with WD40.

Nasa say they do not know of any particular problem with these units under reading and say the cause is likely to be some grit or dirt affecting the spinner.

Now, do I wait for all those April showers and summer downpours or climb the mast with a hose?

Hi, had the same problem a couple of years ago...I squirted silicon spray between the spinner and main housing.. hey presto no more trouble. The yard kindly raised me on a bosuns chair via the crane, an interesting experience!!
Good luck, TonyP
