I need to take the mast down and so I need to cut the wires as it is one complete run from the masthead to the display

When I reassemble, do I need to use any special connectors or can I just crimp them back? I note that there is a coaxial protection. Is that necessary for all the length of the run or will it be ok to miss a few centimetres?

I have a 5 wire NASA Wind. I cut the wire and fitted a deck connector without any problems so I guess you'd be OK to crimp the wires below deck, including the screen. Don't know about the more modern three wire version, though.

Typically the coax shield is grounded at both ends, so cutting is not a problem. Not sure in your case, but probably it's OK. Otherwise, you jumper the shield with a small wire.

I put a 5-pin din plug/socket on mine, making sure to leave a small drip loop in case anything gets past the deck gland. Works perfectly, and easy to disconnect for the next time.
