I’ve bought the in hull mounting kit (Plastic tube oil etc) for the Target 2 depth sounder, in the instructions it says you can bond (Glue?) the transducer directly to the hull with out using the tube/oil. Has any body done this? Apart from the obvious permanentness of this method are there lightly to be any other problems?

Many years ago, yes. Worked OK but not as good as putting it in an oil-filled tube and a lot less well than mounting it through the hull. It's not as permanent as you might think. I stuck mine on with Rapid Araldite but the transducer face is quite smooth and I broke the bond a couple of times when objects in the locker moved.

I have the NASA Clipper Duet e/s & would recommend the oil filled tube. If done properly it gives as good readings as through hull mounting, but without the hole in the bottom!!! The transducer should point vertically down (or at least in line with the boats vertical) and trying to find a dead flat, horizontal surface on the underwater portion of the hull is likely to be a tad difficult, so gluing the thing to the bottom is highly likely to give you erroneous readings. Also less strength returns as the echo will be striking the bottom at an acute angle, so much of the return will be lost.
In addition, if you have it in an oil filled tube & it goes wrong, you can get it out for inspection/service etc, without having to break the glue or flood the boat!
Hope this helps.

Works fine if all goes well and you end up with a righlty placed clear resin.

Unlike the oil solution, if you make a mistake when setting it up, you are stuck (no pun intended).

Particular risk: small air bubbles from the mixing that permanently disturb the signals.

Do you know if this works with the transducer of a Garmin Fishfinder 100? I've got the in-hull transducer and the instructions tell you to epoxy it in place (epoxy provided). As the threads say it's all a bit permanent. Also I can't find a level place away from the keel - there always seems to be a slope. I'd thought of making a horeshoe shaped dam with mastic, pouring epoxy in, allowing to find it's own level (boat's currently level on a trailer!), waiting for it to harden, and then sticking the transducer on top of this. I'd much prefer the oil filled tube tho'. Do all transducers work the same way? If they do the oil filled tube shoulld work BUT.............
