Nasa purchase

Now that spring has sprung (well, it has here in Italy), I need to get down to some work. Now, I've seen that Nasa instruments via YBW appear a lot cheaper than anything I can find here, but I have one or two specific qus to ask you fellow 'velisti'.

1) VHF: Nasa SX35 DSC. Probably a new model. Cheap DSC capability. Anyone out there delighted or dismayed with their purchase?

2) echo + log: Nasa clipper duet. Ditto qu. above, plus does the £159.95 include transducers and cables (not clear from the blurb). Can you switch off the echo and leave the log on?

3) Any comments generally about having the duet rather than two separate units? Other than obvious ones of space and presumably fewer software tricks with the duet packet.

I've had to replace all my antediluvian instruments this winter, and have to say I'm quite happy with the NASA equipment. I went for separate units. They come with the transducers, instructions etc., all the cable you need (though you can buy extensions). For the echo transducer you need the kit which consists of a short length of plastic tube and some glassing kit, plus instructions.
I'm not sure why the 'posh' makes of instruments manage to cost two or even three times as much.

Australian depth sounder: 1. Open 'tinnie' 2. Down contents 3. Fill with water 4. Drop it overboard and see how long it takes to reach the bottom.
Australian speed log: 1. Open another 'tinnie' 2. Down contents 3. Half fill with water 4. Stagger to bows, throw tinnie in 5. See how long it takes to reach stern
Australian distant log : 1. Count number of empty tinnies on board. If there's none left, you must be nearly there....or you've got a problem......

1. We haven't yet had a complaint about any of the SX35's we've sold.

2. So far as i am aware you cannot have depth without log on the duet, other than pullling the connection out of the back. If you think you might later want a repeater for the instruments don't choose Duet because you can't fit one.

3. Duet comes with both transducers, all Nasa kit is complete.

4. One poster suggests the Nasa in-hull kit for installing the depth transducer in a GRP hull, you can buy the Nasa one or make one up from plumblers stuff at your local hardware store.

5. We have a current offer on Nasa repeaters.

Hi,

I have a NASA duet and it seems a good reliable bit of kit. I needed a spare cover for it and phoned Nasa who shipped one for a total of £4.00 including postage which is pretty good.

Well worth the money, especially compared to the competition. For the money, you could buy two sets for the same money as a repeater from other companies.

I have a Clipper log and separate Clipper depth. Both have been excellent over the last 4 years - much better than the Autohelm" unit before them which cost loads more! Depth sometimes throws the odd tantrum but these rearely last more then a minute and then it settles down again.

does the log have a memory, how long will it keep the distance traveled if disconected from main battery, can I progam distance, i.e. set it to start at the distance on my existing log?

I have an SX35 it works very well interfaced to a Garmin GPS no complaints except the Emergecy call button seems too small.
