Nasa meteoman

Anybody got one of these ? Any good? worth having or not? What do think?

It looks OK. Given NASA’s track record, it will probably work OK. It is just another gizmo that measures pressure and gives you a display more immediately than reading the barometer every hour. I have a simple recording barometer that lets me page back hourly up to 24 hours. Simpler, but less visual.

Like all such gadgets, although less so than some, it tends to be a little over-hyped. It is hardly a planning tool. Like all observations that you make, the barometer on your boat can only tell you what is happening now, not what will happen 24, 48 or even 6 hours ahead. A rapid rise or fall in pressure is often a sign of strong winds. Changes of 6 or 10 hPa (mb in old money) in 6 hours are good signs of F 8 or 9 s. But, by that time the strong winds are getting close. In mid-Channel, not much use as a planning tool. Watching the forecasts, texts on VHF, charts from the Met Office and GRIBs, the latter two especially should have given warnings of strong winds three or more days earlier.

In short, by all means have some convenient way of indicating the pressure but do not regard it as the most important weather tool at your disposal. Once in a while it just may give warning of something not predicted. But, that should be rare.

Yes I have one

I fitted it about 3 years ago and it's been fine.

There are several threads on YBW from people moaning about how the plastic cups of the anemometer are fragile, but so far (touching wood etc) mine have been faultless.

It makes me wonder how roughly some pieces of equipment get handled; I take the view that it's not meant to be routinely handled, so if you do need to touch it or clean it, treat it with care. I guess uv will take its toll on the plastic eventually but 5 years would be an acceptable life in my view, given that Nasa supply spares for their products.
Also, from what I hear, other makes of anemometers are also fragile - as you would expect by looking at them. Hence I wonder about the way people treat things then blame the product..

I find it a very useful instrument for showing outside temperature, wind speed, direction and baro pressure, and the historic trends and graphs are also useful if not essential.
I rarely use the inside temp and voltage.

Overall, very pleased with it. Better (I mean flashier) than a small wind indicator pennant which is too much like a miniature rag and stick for my liking!
