NASA marine EX1 exhaust temperature alarm

Don't worry about the actual temperature. Just fit it, go out, warm up the engine then give it a blast at close to max revs for as long as it takes to get a stable temperature reading, then set the alarm temperature 10 degrees higher.

Agree. Took a couple of weeks to get to the correct setting. IIRC mine's set to 45 - 50 deg C.
 
I generally find the external temperature will not go above 50oC unless a problem arises, so the earlier you know about it the better. The threshold can easily be adjusted if nuisance alarms start on a warm Summer's day.
