I am about to replace my very old AquaSignal Tricolor masthead light with its crazed perspex with new. Does any one have experience of low wattage LED Tricolors: in particular the NASA LED Triclor, or indeed any others. Your views would be gratefully appreciated. Richard

fitted one during the last refit. bright and easy to fit. I had to replace the cables and took advatage of using a smaller cable due to the much reduced current. Tested it out at home and scared the dog (V bright). time will tell for build quality but for £45 a good gamble.

yes, I will second that , just fitted one ,very bright, light , no brainer against fitting an led bulb into your original masthead light at £39 ! as some online chandlers are asking !

Sorry - bit confused here. Are you talking about the whole light unit or just the lamp? An LED light unit for £45 sounds a bargain!

A link to a product would be useful. Thanks

My lopolite cost a lot more than £45.00. I'm delighted that I changed though. I've seldom had a season without the need to replace at least one bulb at the masthead and I"m getting a bit old for that.

Looks like good value, but - can the anchor light and the tricolour be stacked like Lopolight , the pictures imply not which seems a pity?
The bracket fitting seems less elegant but maybe there is a patent issue?

thats true its not possible to stack but you could mount adjacent at different heights. I use a triton led for an anchor light and run it above the boom on the halyard. acts as a deck light too.

Having asked the original question I have now had to act as I only have a week's window while my mast is down for chainplate repairs.
My old Aquasignal Tricolor (30yrs old) has a base fitting that looks nothing like the modern ones, so I haven't had the confidence to try fitting one myself. So I am using a marine electrician (he is based in Alton, Hants) and when I discussed replacement with him, we did touch on having a combined Tricolor and Anchor Light. The trouble with this is that it would require extra wiring to masthead, a through coach roof fitting feeding wiring inside through the headlining and then connecting to switch board. I rejected this in view of the (expensive) work involved. We also discussed price for the Tricolor. The electrician is familiar with the new AquaSignal 32 Series LED Tricolor which he says is fully approved and guaranteed. However, for a unit that I wont use much (I hardly ever go night sailing) I decided that I would pay £50 for the NASA rather than the discounted price of £186 he will pay for the AquaSignal.
I actually will get more use out of an anchor light, and a temporary one with a cigarette lighter attachment should do the job. I like the idea of the Triton LED (see posting same day someone placed for Anchor Light), but this one for £25 http://www.saltyjohn.co.uk/anchorlight.htm draws as little current and has a photocell that turns it on/off for night and day. Richard.

I dislike the masthead anchor light anyway. When in an anchorage, your potential accident is another small vessel and they are in general not looking away up aloft. If they are looking at all.

If you insist on anchoring away from recognised anchorages or in channels, then you do need something at a higher level. Like a 200 watt beacon maybe?
