I recently ordered a Nasa HF3/W. After a while I received a HF3/P.
I have a couple of questions and can't seem to find any help from Nasa as they don't seem to be too keen on support for their products.
1. Exactly what is the difference between a HF3/P and a HF3/W
2. How do you switch the backlight on, if there is one

Seems to be lively enough so not complaining too much. The reason I ordered a HF3/W was for weather forecast reception. So far I haven't been able to find any transmissions but still early days. Anyone know time and frequencies that are good for receiving these?

The HF3/P has an audio output.
The audio output is the one used by the majority of Software ie JVComm32 by connecting it to the line or mic input of your PC.

There is no backlight on the unit...not on mine anyway.

PM Me and I'll send you a list of weather fax frequencies.

1. According to their website , the /W is a /P with the weather software
2. There isnt a backlight.

Some searching the internet will show the frequencies still in use

Propagation of radio signals changes during the day, as well as the broadcast content being on a schedule. The result is that you will often only get a bit of a map of something you didnt want like e.g. Ice cover ...

I have one of the HF3/M models from a few years back that I converted to effectively the HF3/P by adding another socket wired across the volume control to bypass the crummy 'digital' interface.

I then tried the reciever out on a communications test set and I can tell that the HF3/M is pretty sensitive and stable (apart from the clarifier control going jumpy with age) but the signal to noise never gets really good with stronger signals.
Theres always a noticeable hiss.

Not bad for the money though unlike their wind instruments.
