Feedback please...

I'm looking to replace my external VHF speaker, the last 2 lasted disappointingly short times, despite the speaker being protected in a coaming cubby.

The NASA speaker looks ideal, bracket mounted as I need, and a good price at around £11.00...

One would think 'well how difficult can a speaker be ?', but Navico's effort lasted months, same thing on a friends' boat did the same.

Thing is, after several very unhappy experiences, I'd sworn never to use NASA kit again; has anyone tried one of these speakers over any length of time please ?

Had one of these for 2 years on the last boat, always worked fine but the waterproof claim.......the screws went rusty even though it was under the sprayhood.
If it is the small black speaker we are talking about?

Aquaholic,

yes that sounds like it.

The screws went rusty on the other 'waterproof' speakers I've had ( apart from Clarion hi-fi jobs which I decided were too heavy ) - what is it with people that they can't use stainless screws ?!

If that's all that goes wrong though, I could live with it and dab paint on...

Thanks.

If it's the small black rectangular type, I've used one for the last 5 years but it's not mounted permantly - I just put it on deck when I'm on board. Works fine and I've a spare one in my shed. Yes the screws do rust but not had to take it apart yet so not a problem.

I couldn't resist one at £11 either. I didn't expect much, and have been pleasantly surprised. Does a job very well. Like PetiteFleur I only put it in the cockpit when I'm sailing - it sits in a cup holder.

No, I was more thinking of 'buying something marketed by UK Ltd'...

Sadly I have no doubt the thing was nailed together in, probably, China; I expect with some secret device so that when they make their move to take over the world, my coaming blows up !

Why not just replace the drive unit. A water resistant mylar cone drive unit is about £3, assuming you can get into the enclosure. I am about to replace the driver in my Navico LS200 external speaker which has gone t**s up. Am having trouble though in finding one of 3 1/2" diameter.

The NASA one is pretty poor, definitely wouldn't call it waterproof, and you can get a nearly identical one from Maplin even cheaper.
