NASA EX-1

Looks great - how would you hook up to an alarm?

The item is a thermostat, which can be used to cause a horn to sound if the temperature exceeds a certain value. Take a horn, wire it to the battery via the normally open terminals on the thermostat and it will sound when the temperature exceeds a set value. Fix the temperature sensor to the exhaust pipe - self amlagamating tape should do it. You'd need to experiment determine what the normal running temperature of your exhaust is but once set, you'll have a simple cheap early warning system of cooling problems.

I know there are alternatives (although the one shown in the link is bulky) but was particularly interested in EX-1.

It seems very expensive. I used a digital thermometer with built-in alarm on my last boat and it worked beautifully. I installed it when we started using the Forth & Clyde canal every year to get to the West coast. It never failed to warn of weed in the filter and only cost about £10-£15.

I'm pretty certain that you can get something for a lot less that £105. Seems expensive for a temp. alarm. Ours wasn't waterproof but didn't need to be as the meter was installed below deck. No problem hearing the alarm.

Sorry that I can't help with the unit you are asking about. I just wanted to let you know that alternatives do work and cost 20% of the NASA unit. Perhaps I missed something and it has other features.
