I have a Silva S15 DSC VHF which performs perfectly satisfactorily. It can also display GPS and Navtex with appropriate inputs, which I haven't tried. I believe a later (less expensive) version dispenses with these extra features, but just provides the DSC VHF. I would have bought one of these if it had been available at the time.
The Silva logs the last 20 DSC calls received (not a recording, but a list).
I haven't tried pushing the red button, but I don't think you have to do anything else first, unless you want to specify the exact distress situation (fire, sinking, MOB etc) It sends out a DSC distress call and you naturally cover the full details in the resulting VHF voice communications.
