The new owner of Triola has purchased the Yakker to display the AIS output to his tablet. The NASA Clipper AIS only has an NMEA input for the GPS and has no output other than the USB one, as it displays the information on its little LCD screen.

Within the manual, however, it alludes to the fact that the usb wire can, from pin 2, be taken back to a plotter, or, presumably, an NMEA common that will in turn feed the Yakker with the AIS information?

Madness? Has anyone managed to get one of these talking to the NMEA common?

Are you talking about this device? AIS SART Plotter - Nasa Marine Instruments

I think you've managed to confuse everybody! You mention a "Clipper AIS", which doesn't seem to exist. Then give a link to the "Radar" AIS display. But then quote from the manual for the AIS Engine.

Yes, that's the guy.

I've managed to confuse myself also it would appear. Note to self, wake up before posting.

Not to mention introducing the concept of an “NMEA common” whose meaning is unclear.

The NMEA common bar where all the NMEA devices connect together, this little sucker here.

In short, I'm guessing connecting this AIS SART Plotter - Nasa Marine Instruments to this Yakker is impossible - he needs something like this: QK-A024 AIS Receiver with NMEA Multiplexer + WiFi - AIS receiver, Marine NMEA multiplexer,IoT solutions in UK to replace both things (clearly, depending on his requirements.)

I had a customer some years ago who had a few of these units in a far-flung location. He had managed to tap into the circuitry to get NMEA out. If you're keen, I probably have the details be sent me somewhere. Message me if you'd like the info.
I always thought NMEA output would have been a real bonus on these, plus CPA/TCPA.
