I have the AIS engine wired to laptop it is just an NMEA connection, I am sure this has been covered before but I cannot find it using search, there is a section on the Garmin web site that details NMEA connections and I am sure if you Google the question you will find a link
The AIS engine will feed a GPS plotter as long as the plotter has AIS capabilty (which I think the 550 has).
The relevant connections from the engine are:
Pin 2 38,400B from engine to GPS NMEA IN
Pin 9 4,800B from GPS NMEA OUT to engine
Pin 5 common ground.
You need at least 2 NMEA ports on the plotter (again, I think the 550 has), and ensure that the speeds are set correctly.
You do not need to connect pin 9 if all you want to do is connect the engine to the plotter. However, if you also want to connect a laptop, then the feed from the engine to the PC is from pin 3. If you set the PC to receive at 38,400 baud then you will find that the GPS signal received by the engine is repeated in the sentences sent by the engine to the PC.
The only lead I received with my AIS engine (mk1) was the 9-pin to 9-pin lead for connecting to a pc, with an additional blue wire for the 4800 baud input from the chartplotter.
Well John, when you cut the laptop plug off the cable, the wires inside are as described above and you just use the two mentioned. The blue lead is to pass information from a GPS receiver through the AIS engine to a laptop when it only has one nine pin serial port.
