Does anyone have experience of fitting one of these units in the cockpit.?
I see that NASA state that they are not waterproof but they appear to be of very similar construction to the Clipper instruments.
I seek to locate one in partial shelter by the sprayhood, but can't guarantee that it will never get wet in use. I don't want the unit down in the cabin because I believe that the AIS's value is having the information to hand, especially in bad weather.
Anyone solved this problem?
Cheers

I have the nasa ais radar and it is excellant. I understand from nasa that, although the case is splashproof, the reason they specify cabin mounting is to protect the display from overheating in sunlight. I think they said the maximum temperature was 60 degrees. Higher than that can cause damage. Clippers, they said, can go much hotter.
While 60 degrees sounds hot. (too hot to comfortably touch) that temperature can easily be reached in direct sunlight.

The AIS / Navtex / Meteoman cases are quite different from the other Clipper 'cockpit' instruments. As noted, the LCD is likely to get damaged by constant sun exposure (and no cover available). In addition, the case has no waterproof rating so I wouldn't chance it. Wouldn't be any warranty cover if water damaged!

You could use the alarm feature and set to a distance you feel comfortable with. Another option would be to have it in a perspex box - the sort of thing used for console-fitted audio units but bigger.

Hi, many thanks for the sensible advice.
I still like the idea of having the information to hand, but will take your comments on board and mount it with weather and sunlight protection.

cheers
