NASA AIS - no gps signal

I did not do the installation but when switched on display says no gps signal - where should I look to fix this - all wires are connected at the back. Could the instrument be faulty?

The ais should have its own gps antenna. The cable and connections should be the first thing to check.

The NASA AIS engine does not have a built in GPS receiver, so it may not have a dedicated GPS antenna/receiver. It accepts GPS via NMEA 0183, so it's more likely that it will be connected to a plotter or GPS, which will obviously need to be switched on as well as the AIS.

In addition, if the NMEA feed has positive and negative, the negative signal wire should be connected to the NASA negative power supply.

Perhaps that depends upon whether it's a receiver or a transceiver?

Why would the AIS be indicating it has no gps signal if it does not require GPS?
It has been indicated that the plotter needs to be on to provide the GPS signal . Sounds like that's the problem.
