Sorry sorry sorry we have tried and tried to get this going but without succes.
This is the story.
AIS hits present and working to my ( below decks)PC
PIN 2 on the 9pin plug identified ( its actually orange on the extension lead we are using )
Pin 2 connected to the brown lead on the Garmin ( Garmin state that this is the input lead for port 1)
pin 5 ( black on the extension lead) connected to the negative supply to the garmin.
garmin settings... NMEA 1800 high speed on.
AIS on the Garmin on.

Thanks to Dave and others who have tried to help ( I must be a real numpty!!) but we are still struggling!!

Any more tips? has anyone done this?

many thanks

Our NMEA multiplexer doesnt receive from the NASA AIS however the chart plotter does and the laptop also if conncted directly rather than via the multiplexer

We put a scope on the output from the NASA AIS and it's output is rubbish, way off spec (low voltage)

So it's entirely possible you've got it all wired up correctly but the Garmin NMEA input is (like our multipplexer) expecting within spec (for RS232/422) voltage levels of at least +3v nd not getting them. We measured just 2.4v (IIRC, it was well below the minimum spec anyway).

Many thanks for all the advice. We followed all your tips and, eventually the only thing not double checked was the pin numbering on the 9 pin plug. Further checking on the internet showed that we were using the wrong pin numbers ( yes shame on us) Using the correct numbers and your advice it worked first time and looks good on the little garmin.
We used port one on the garmin and connected pin 2 of the AIS engine ( which I think is Black but on our 232 extention is Brown!!) to the Brown Garmin wire. Pin 5 from the AIS was connected to the common negative used by the garmin.
The screen wires were also connected ( but it seemed to work without this connection)
In the garmin configuration settings we selected port 1 and ensured it was set for High speed.
That was it and it works fine.
Thanks again to you all.
