Narrowboat, Canal Boat Forums?

Having sold Rogue, (Moody 44), I'm now looking at buying a narrowboat. Can anyone recommend a forum like ybw.com, where the advice is equally comprehensive, as freely given, and the banter friendly?

I think is seriously good. Particularly the electrics/alternator bits involving Gibbo and Cervena as seen on this forum. There is a narrowboatworld with it's own forums, and worth looking at Tuesdaynightclub (.com?) to see where narrowboats can get to. Expect there's quite a few more. The newsgroup uk.recwateraterways used to be very good as well.

Had a good look at this site last night and its pretty good - in fact they appear to be as nuts as many of us - although with a narrowboat slant of course !

One very interesting thread about breasting up with lots of comments about Thames experiences including some quite helpful ones. They obviously have their own brand of Apollo and No Regrets :D

Anyways, I've signed up and recognised one or two others from here - why not do the same - lets have an outing !

Aaargh narrowboats!

I have just spent two weeks on the upper Thames. The damned things are fornicating and multiplying! I think I may sell my boat and buy a motor caravan.

Quite a few

Just got back from a week on the river, went up from Temple to Abingdon and back. We were amazed how quiet the river was, only yesterday could have been classed as busy, i.e. we had to wait at a few locks and stand off. Nothing compared to how I remember August being 4/5 years back.

Saw more narrow boats than cruisers and I have to say they were friendlier and more considerate than some of the motor boaters we encountered, the speed and wash from some of my fellow motor boaters was enough to spill drinks and for sure damage the banks and wildlife. We moored nr Dorchester one night and had the generatoir 1KV Honda running about 30ft back from our boat and 60ft back from a narrowboat moored ahead of us. The lady politely asked me if we would run the generator all night as she said despite shutting all her windows she could hear it and it was disturbing her. This was was around 8.30 PM I guess. I explained that no we did not run it all night and that we were giving the fridge a good boost but would turn it off if it was disturbing her. She thanked me and we turned it off. I was surprised to be honest that she could hear it, it's quiet as anything and although I could just hear it from the open cockpit, my wife could not hear it at all from the cabin. But I guess some people are more sensitive to a noise than others. Also she was very polite and friendly about it.

We moored at Beale park on the way up and only a few narrowboats had arrived that we saw. One of the narrow boaters said many would start arriving from the 12th as the exhibitors need to set up and they were expecting up to 400 this year. On the way back they were already starting to raft up.

So whilst a narrow boat would not be my choice of boat for the Thames I have found all those we have encountered to be friendly, enthusiatic boaters, willing to help out with your lines and have a chat. As I have also found most motor boaters to be. There will always be the odd few from all types of craft who are inconsiderate, leave Gaps just too small for a boat and speed past without care.
