Hi All,

I am going to replace my existing engine with a nanni or beta engine.

Is there any difference between the two makes.
I understand they are both based on the Kubota manufactured block.

The size I am interested in is 40-50 bhp.

It has been mentioned to me that the Beta has a heavier flywheel giving a better
inertia momentum -( not exactly sure what that means).

Any info/advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Duke.

The heavier flywheel will make it smoother at idling speed, but slightly slower to rev up(probably only seconds in actual fact). As you say both are based on the Japanese Kubota industrial engine which has a good reputation. Final answer will depend on your nearest dealer; cost of spare parts - get a quotation for a selection of normal service parts + say alternator and starter motor; what sort of equipment is included and of course price; Warranty; (and colour if your wife is concerned!) Compare the specs carefully, go to the SBS or the LBS and see if they are doing any deals for ordering at a show. Don't forget you might have to upgrade your propshaft/prop/sterngland/coupling/silencer/waterlock/fuel system etc, etc.

When we purchased our present boat, she had a new Beta 28hp that had less than 20 hours usage. I am not mechanically minded, but can follow the instructions in a manual...unfortunately the previous owner failed to provide me with the instruction manual! I spoke with the Beta team at LBS explaining my predicament, and within minutes, was presented with a brand new copy of the service manual no payment wanted! I have found no problems in getting spares - impeller, water pump gaskets etc from local agents, and any advice asked for has been forthcoming!

I would certainly recommend Beta to anyone...they are a firm that seem to believe in that very old fashioned word...SERVICE!!!

Endy

The two engines are virtually identical. I bought a new 10hp Nanni for my previous boat and was impressed with it. I have to say though that I was less impressed with the importer, Peachment Propulsion who seemed unable to supply the correct size of fan belt for the engine despite several attempts. Were I to repower my current boat I would either try the Beta or a Yanmar.

I've installed Beta engines, quite a few, they are reliable, well put together, quiet, powerful (for there size) and simple, they also come with everything you will need, ioncluding good mounts. I reccomend them. Nice shade of red aswell! (OK, only joking about that)
