Nanni engines?

A good mate of mine is/was buying a new haines 350 fitted with a Nanni 280 hp engine,this is a demo model with 38 hours registered.Today when he went for a "shake down" he became afraid when he noticed what he thought was excessivesmoke from the exhaust,just wondering if anyone has any opinions or thoughts on this or who to contact for advice or re-assurance all help greatfully received.
 
A good start would be for your friend to discuss it with his boat surveyor. Not sure if they'll be any use but Peachment in Norfolk are the main importers of Nanni (Toyota) engines.
 
Hi Ralf, I re-engined my boat with the same engines two years ago and had exessive smoke as the boat was coming under full load, about 2000 revs Peachments came on a sea trial with the main trouble shooter from France and they couldnt do anything about the smoke, the French guy said they were aware of the problem and had designed a smaller turbo which would spin up quicker and that they would fit them for me in the near future I never heard from them again. The engines had no exesive smoke on start up and above 2500 revs no smoke it just smoked badly as it was coming onto the plane. Hope this helps
 
I have a Ben Antares 980 with 2 x 200hp 4 cly Nannis. Great reliable engines bit they are a bit smokey (esp at tickover).

White smoke. Spoke to chap from Peachments at SIBS 2008 (think his name was Dempsey) who said that it could be a fuel timing issue and that there was a special tool which they can send to agent to check timing. Havent yet sorted service as local agent here not the best and have done filter changes etc myself.

They still smoke but you get used to it. Would prefer it improved though! There is another chap in marina with same engines in a different boat and his are pretty smokey too (white again).

I think thne bigger Nannis are known to be quite smokey as they are not very sophisticated and most (except new big ones) lack any electronic fuel timing/injection as far as i know.

My experience of the smaller Nannis (<100hp) from my days working on hire boats in Ireland is that they are less smokey.

Interesting that the French werent bothered which suggests the factory knows they make smokey (but v reliable) engines!

I've got the 200hp 4 cyl engines as well, and I have to say, Mine are not too smokey at all. Mind you, I've spent quite a bit of time cruising with boats with the old VP AD41's, which would make any other engine look smokeless!! Just ask HLB.

Are yours not smokey even at idle in the marina before you head out? If not, i need to get mine checked out (and the other chap's in the marina too) but really need to bring it off the IOM to find someone truly competent to investigate.

Are you still thinking of a 12m?

I am tempted by one (heart not head given the recession, but probably a good time to buy). Did you sea trial one? How does hull compare to our 980?

Also did it tick all the boxes from a comfort/space/cabin/galley/storage point of view?

Sorry for the delay - been busy. The Nanni's are a little smokey at start up I suppose, but when I've been on cruises in company they always seem to be among the least smokey when we're all starting up to leave. Ours are maintained by Nick at Dickies Brighton who really seems to know his stuff.

Yes, still interested in the 12m, but waiting for the business stuff to happen. We took one out for a sea trial and it's a great boat to drive. Haven't had a go in the rough stuff, but will do if we go down that route. Very nice inside and we think would suit us very well.
