Naming a boat - How difficult can it be?

I am always dismayed by the waste of a good bottle; why don't they drink the stuff first and then pour it on...?

When we had a naming ceremony for my Dad's boat - more than 40 years ago - the local vicar (a friend and fellow sailor) who conducted the ceremony refused to waste wine by smashing the bottle - a splash on the bow roller and the rest went in glasses!

I (wearing my H&S hat, which I don't actually have) wouldn't have stood above the bottle I was smashing after I had waved it about and bashed it so much previously.

They do it better in Turkey

Hang the national flag from the bridge down the front of the accomodation and slit the throats of two goats so the blood runs down and out of the anchor hawser pipes.

Followed by much eating smoking and dancing all around the accomodation. ( this on a 215,000 tanker loading crude oil at the time)

Renamed my pride and joy the other week. Suitable homage to the gods of wind and seas plenty of libations poured but didn't attempt to smash a bottle on the bow. Assembled guests drank toasts etc.

Some while ago when I was involved in a Sail training trust HRH The Princess Anne did a naming ceremony 1st bottle hit the bow didn't break, came off the ribbon and dissapeared into the harbour! Probably 'rescued' by navy divers! 2nd bottle hit the bow roller with such force it bent the fitting, bottle breaks showering the assembled VIP party with broken glass and champers, those of us far enough away not to catch the debris nearly died laughing. Lucky nobody got hurt.

As the video shows not as easy as you think!

I have heard (bit it may be an urban legend) that specially weakened bottles are used for "professional" launches, to ensure the bottle smashes. But I am not sure of the source of that information!
