They are called concretions and are found in sedimentary rocks. They form before the sediments have turned into hard rocks. The balls are what is left once the softer sedimentary rock has been eroded away. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concretion They can cause steering problems in directional oil wells as they deflect the bit.
