 Did I miss something?

When did the EA require a name on boat sides of the bow?

What's wrong with the transom?

A requirement since boats have been registaired on the river long before I was born, standards seem to have dropped though and nobody gets picked up on things like that. Lots of boats don't fly ensigns anymore yet years ago it was considered the only way to differentiate between a privately owned boat and a hire boat, now flying an ensign seems to be unfashionable and elitist.

A shame really (quite apart from the Blues and Reds with the associated controversies - don't go there...) it makes the River more colourful and you'd be surprised how ice breaking a simple question such as "what club is that" or where is that from" can be.

I've had many conversations on that basis and learnt a lot about other folk, their boats, background and interests over the years. Even persuaded Byron to accept me as a "proper boater".....

Hear Hear! Lets try and keep some of our pride and traditions going. We have Rainbow flags, South African flags and 'I've been to Cornwall flags', Scottish (cry freedom) Independance flags etc. etc. Soon I suspect we will have a panoply of Eastern Eurpean flags adorning some of our boats.
Please don't feel embarrased to fly the Red Ensign, it has rather more history and meaning than many!

As a kid from Slough I used to cycle to Windsor and dream about owning a boat like those moored near the Brocas. I knew that those with a Red Ensign were proper, (non hire), boats with proper captains.

Now I own my tiny cruiser I have thought about 'wearing' the Red Ensign and read about where and when it should be shown. But I'm so new to all this and have never been in the navy so was rather concerned about being seen as pretentious or a poseur.

Does being an English land lubber qualify me to display it?

Well I have an ensign and various flags from clubs so one out of two aint bad.

Its a bit of a no no adding names to hypalon tubes anyway so I have my excuse!!!

You can put vinyl lettering on hypalon.

I had a small RIB when i was growing up that had a name stuck on it , lasted for years :)

When we got one of our boats the previous owner had stuck letters on the tubes so when we wanted to rename it they had faded around the them making it a big job to buff them out. Even after a lot of effort you can still see them so I don't think its the best idea any more to stick them on the tubes.

Its clearly marked on the transom so I wouldn't have thought it's going to be a huge problem unless I get a jobsworth on my case.

Fly it with pride mate . Everytime you are on board ! Down at dusk and up at dawn are the only rules , other than that its your right to fly it .

Anyone can wear a Red Ensign 'cos it's a national flag,
Blues (should) only be worn by those folks who have "permission" so to do,
Anything else is up to you.
Although the Merchant Shipping Acts are more restrictive, in effect because you're not at sea no official body is going to bother to take action if you wear anything "incorrect".

The only don'ts (IMHO) are:-
ST.George cross out of respect for the Dunkirk Little Ships who are entitled to fly a defaced George from the masthead and (I think) the jack and ensign staffs as well. Sudden thought it might be great if we ALL could dip our ensigns when passing a LS.

Skull and crossbones (whatever it's called). Increasingly worn by hire boats - naff.

I occasionally wear an obsolete ensign to which I'm not entitled (but it's obsolete so not a flag) just to wind folks up.... That act has started lots of conversations culminating in a lecture on Vexilology from me looky here if you're interested
