So is there a way we can Name & Shame the idiots we all routinely meet on our travels ?

This week Lionsdens, Sneaky Pete and myself have all reported incidents by fellow Moboers.

Some form of listing with of course a right to reply.

Problem I see will be how we avoid getting sued for libel, as largely these incidents have only one or two observers, and generally not enough time to get the camera out.

Ideas as to how this might work without risk of all concerned getting sued. Perhaps an honesty box, where once reported an opportunity to explain or simply apologise is provided without risk of litigation - at least for forum members.

There should be a "numpty box" for actions that might not be dangerous, but cause you to think "Why would you do that?"

e.g. a Jeanneau that was running parallel on the port side, and slightly ahead, turns in front to cross port to starboard maybe four or five boat lengths away. We are both doing 20kts+, and we have the whole of the Solent to play with, so "Why would you do that?"

The downside would be that none of us are perfect, and he who throws stones in glass houses etc.

Perhaps a set of rear view mirrors should have been ticked on his option list!

Look - I have no doubt that I would get a 'mention in despatches' at some point, but would expect to admit and apologise as appropriate - but then I would probably call the apology and wave an acknowledgement anyway - most of these dick heads just don't seem to realise the chaos literally in their wake !

I'm sure I'm going to take a pasting for this......... But........

You meet idiots in all walks of life, be it at work, in the car, at the pub and on the boat.

The forum isn't a place for having a go at fellow boaters, if a boat has caused a dangerous situation then the picture of them should be passed on to the relevant harbour master, coast guard etc...... Otherwise we'll all find a picture of us put on here at some time or another.

I've c@cked things up (as I have done in the car) and will always give an apologetic wave, that's life.

Forum should be fun and informative......... But I'm probably in the minority thinking that.

I'm with you. Vent but no naming on here, you may well be in the wrong anyway!

Totally agree

Who says that your judgment, or mine, is right, though? I don't routinely meet idiots; in fact I hardly ever do, even in the Solent on a very busy weekend.

Ditto that.

Spotted on the boat next to me in Bonifacio Harbour last summer. A Guy Couach 22m flybridge driven by a pro captain (who was somewhat incompetent as regards Colregs, but that's another story)

As regards naming and shaming, I don't think it makes sense on this forum to do that in any formal way. Life is too short, and often we criticise other boats/skippers without seeing their point of view. Sure people can still post the odd rant on here if they were badly cut up by another boat on the weekend, as they always have done, and that's enough imho

I'd like to name and shame a crew of a boat which approached the Thames Barrier at about 25 kts on the wrong side of the river arguing with London VTS. They claimed in a pompous tone that VTS were wrong as there was no speed limit and they were entitled to travel at a speed of their choosing.
Outside St Kats they positioned themselves on the hotel pontoon outside taking up about 3 moorings.
They then ignored St Kats instructions to the waiting boats and barged in cutting another boat up.
The couple on board then ignored the dockmasters instructions and refused to allow us to raft up in the lock.
This took place around the end of May 2013 and I'm glad to get it off my chest...
Boat name was Shalim@r , see if you can work out the name :)

Mea Culpa.

Having probably made at some time in the past most of the cockups that are likely be mentioned on this subject, unfortunately still have a few more years boating left in me to commit the the ones I have missed..
Moan and groan...maybe .... but name and shame.?

Depends how it's done doesn't it?

There's always 2 sides to a story - most of the time we can only see one side and in many cases I would struggle to see justification for the others actions.

Perhaps it depends on how dangerous the situation was - if it's just an annoyance then oh well, but if you had to take drastic action to avoid a serious collision then perhaps it deserves a fuller discussion - if we're lucky enough to get the other party on here then perhaps you could find out the why - it could be something outside their immediate control - ie steering failure - or they could've just been silly and not looked. Hopefully it wasn't done deliberately!

Personally, I don't like this because as others have said, there are always two sides to the story and its easy to jump to conclusions and make assumptions. I could see this turning into a sport for some who will report seeing a forgotten dangling fender as a major hazard that should carry a sentence. Like Parsifal, I also wondered if there was something underneath this.

I agree and it could also become a medium for personal grievances to be played out, not to mention degenerating into a yottie v mobo bunfight. I'm quite sure that all of us have unknowingly and unintentionally irritated somebody else at one time or another during our own boating activities so its also a case of those living in glasshouses not throwing stones etc etc
