Buying a registered boat and wish to change name (we know about the bad luck tales and prepared to chance it) . What do we do in terms of the registration and who should we contact ?
You need to contact the Registry of Shipping & Seamen PO Box 165 Cardiff CF14 5FU.
You'll need to send the Bill of Sale, registration certificate etc to them with a fee (£80 I think). You'll need to choose an unique name - this is the bit we struggled with. In the end I phoned directory enquiries and got a phone number for RSS, but I've lost it since. We phoned through out each name in turn until we found one that wasn't registered.
Eventually, when you have a new name, send all the forms and fee and wait a couple of weeks for them to issue a Carving and Marking Note. Only then can you remove the old name and put the new name on. You then have to send back the carving note signed to say you've done it and we're still waiting (2 weeks later) for the certificate.
Hope I get it this week as I'm planning to go to France next weekend.
Then, to appease the gods, you have to remove any item on board with the old name on it. Painting over it isn't good enough, apparently. Finally you crack a bottle, sing to the moon and various seagods and get hideously drunk and no harm should come to you or your ship.
Method no. Two. Send little note to RSS ask for SSR they will send you anything you want for a tenner, even two names or numbers. I have spare ones if you have any trouble. Course you will be stuck with the name Mucky Farter No.2 Or three. But what the hell!!

I've also just moved to the SSR as the Part 1 registration needed renewing and they wanted £46! You can get SSR for £10 for 5 years - but if you have a marine mortgage it must be on Part 1.
