I have recently contacted the Environment Agency as to changing the name of my boat (bought it secondhand back in July). They said if I wait until the renewal is due in December it will be free, otherwise its £8 if I wish to change it today. I have also contacted my insurance company who said I need to let them know the new name as and when its changed and that's it.

I don't know why, but I thought this was a more complicated procedure, seems I was wrong - am I missing something here.

Regarding the superstition side of things, I have been assured if the boat is out of the water when its renamed (currently on hard standing at Penton) I don't need to dance around a maypole with a bottle of bubbly on me head - you know what I mean. Also the SSR registration only applies if the boat is taken out of UK waters and apparently mine expired in 2008 anyway with a previous owner. If I re-register (£25 Fee) I can call the boat whatever I like.

Is it really this simple ?

I fear that you have been misinformed rather. It is absolutely essential to dance around the boat 3 times whilst drinking rum and red wine. Do this first whilst taking the old name off, and then again when putting the new name on. The more friends doing it with you the better :)

Presume you checked with the EA that the new name is available?

Yes the name is available and they said they would reserve it for me until the registration is due.

I live very close to the Thames in Wraysbury and had the misfortune of flooding in 2003, I have since discovered their flood line website where I can check the river level downstream of Old Windsor lock which is updated every two hours. This now gives me an indication if I need to panic or not and prepare for flooding !

Apart from the lack of good mooring sites between Chertsey and Hampton Court, I have been very impressed with the services provided by the Environment Agency.

It's a piece of cake, we changed our boat's name last winter. I notified the marina and the insurance co, cancelled the CG66 form and filed a new one, and paid twenty five quid for a new SSR registration (same number as before though). Bingo - job done. Oh and twelve quid for new boat name vinyls. Simples.

Edit; no idea what the EA requirements might be though.

Part 1 Registration is a whole different ballgame altogether. Pain in the proverbial.
