is anyone out there using the Nasa HF3/W weather SSB unit?
It reads very well but would like some first hand info if possible.
thanks

I've used the HF3M, plugged into lap top for weather faxes and text, and audio for weather reports and listening into nets on Atlantic crossings. Its a great little radio, easy to tune and doesn't seem to need much of an aerial apart from a bit of wire up the backstay to get good images.

Seemed pretty robust as mine has never been fixed down, I use it as my portable weather info to take to any boat along with laptop chart/plotter and gps.

I am using one.
I have the /P version which connects into the laptop audio input.
I use JVcomm32 sofware which is much better than the software supplied by NASA.
Available free here:
www.jvcomm.de

You can RX weather fax from either UK or German sources and with a navtex antenna or even a long wire RX navtex on your PC.
A lot depends on getting the right software.
It's a great piece of kit and highly recommended, as it is mutifunctional.
You can also listen to Marine SSB transmissions, amateur radio and even resolve amateur slowscan TV and weather satellite images once you gat a feel for it.

Steve.

I use an old Yaesu SSB reciever with Nasa active antenna.

Will endores the use of JVcom32 software as I put the bits together with a wire antenna at home and got a picture first go despite a low signal strength and poor volume. Mind you it was white on black, but soon realised that slight tuning gave the more usual black on white.

Re: Nasa SSB HF3/W

Had one for three years and find it excellent; as others here, we use Jvcomm32, ours via the laptop audio input and regularly receive weather faxes from Northwood, also Navtex etc etc.

Radio four comes in great, as does Capitol Gold(?) and the W/S BBC we have an active ‘stick’ antennae from Commtel powered from 12vdc which greatly improves the gain, but almost any ‘long-wire’ would do if you have the rigging to support it.

Very good bit of kit and well worth the money.
