If you need another crewman for the trip shout up, I'm based in York but lived in Scarborough until a couple of years ago (Prince of Wales Terrace and occasionally East Ayton).
Hi all, I have been searching for information on the tidal Ouse myself and this is my first post on here so I hope you don't mind me jumping in on your thread Markspark7.
I'm new to boating and this will only be my 2nd season of cruising having done 150hrs so far. We did the cruise from Bororough Bridge to Burton Waters Marina last year via Naburn to Selby then the canals to Keadby. This year we would like to go via Trent Falls mid July to avoid all the locks and swing bridges (still a lovely route via the canals if time is on your side). I will be doing this in company with another boat (both 240hp sports cruisers). I have done loads of research and have purchased the 3 boating association charts for the Ouse and Trent. I have the tide tables and will get the updated charts from ABP site nearer the time. However I still have a couple of questions and would appreciate any help given.
1. Can the lock at Barmby on the Marsh be used to break up the journey and avoid waiting for the tide at Trent Falls. Leaving Barmby on the flood as soon as we have enough water then heading down to Trent Falls and up to Torksey in one dash. Has anyone got experience of doing this.
2. We have had loads of conflicting advice regarding entering ABP area single handed. Although I will have a crew of 2 my friend will be single handed on his boat (not ideal I know) but we will be close by and he has 18yrs boating experience. The question is would he be breaking any SOLAS V regs or ABP by-laws?
No mention of it on ABP web site by-laws that I can find.
SOLAS V for Pleasure Craft says:-
crew: take into account the experience and physical
ability of your crew. Crews suffering from cold, tiredness
and seasickness won’t be able to do their job properly
and could even result in an overburdened skipper.
I don't know about the lock you mention.
But I have come out of Goole in our previous boat (Sealine S23 with 170hp diesel ) against the 5 knot incoming tide and blasted it to Trent falls to make it there with the tide still coming in . Not fuel efficient - although the twisty but wide Ouse was great fun at 23 to 25knots. You should get help from the tide going up the Trent.
Getting to Goole from Naburn is something I havent done. Arriving at Goole in time to get in is no doubt the issue. Free locking at Goole Ocean lock is 3hrs each side of HW.
Free locking at Goole is 2.5 hrs before HW to 1.5 hours after HW. Outside those times you pay but since last week they will only lock pleasure craft in 3 hours either side of HW due to "safety issues" now. See NTM below:
This has made it somewhat difficult to get from Naburn to Goole in one go!
I spotted the NTM on your very informative blog Naughty-cal. Keep up the good work it's a great read.
MartynG - The lock I refer to is the barrage at the Derwent - Ouse junction about 17mls upstream from Trent falls. But if you have done it from Goole in the Sealine s23 that sound like we would be ok from the Derwent.
Well that's the trip completed and all went to plan.
We paid a visit on foot to the Glory hole in Lincoln for a "will we or won't we" fit under there next year. Then we spotted Naughty-Cal moored up at the other side so went for a chat. Cheers for the advise re the Glory hole. :encouragement:
We also spotted a stranded Sealine near Trent Falls on the way back home. The Humber rescue had it covered and the high speed rib was soon in view with flashing blue lights turned on.
