Mysterious sailboat gadget. What is its purpose pls ?

The spring looks as if it’s there to keep the cord straight or off clear of something, when it’s lark’s-headed to a base of some sort? Could it be some sort of snatch block to mount on a toe-rail in order to feed a MOB recovery line from a handy-billy on the shroud to a winch? Just a thought.

A sure way to find out it's purpose is to throw it away.
Shortly afterwards you will find a task that needs a loop of rope with a snap shackle and a spring.
Seldom fails.

if you pass the snap shackle end through a hole in something smaller than the diameter of the spring, you'd have a sort of semi springy thingy for the holding open of something.... engine cover me'be?

Kept by the hatch near the flares and emergency knife. Length about 12inches.

Any suggestions as to its real purpose please ?

Oh, BTW, I I have a Port and a Starboard Snurble Gripthribley so I know it's not one of those.
I am sure if you ask Andy next time you are aboard he will explain, in his own way of course !
