Further to Unit 18's 'blast from the past' MBY boat report from 1973, here is another (as requested by jfm) from 1975 in the form of the Mystere 43, sister of the Moonraker and Marauder.

I also have a copy of a comprehensive boat report on the Mystere from MBY in 1975 - if anybody would like a copy, please PM me.

Were these the boats that Colin Chapman of Lotus was involved in? If I remember rightly they were very lightly built and prone to structural problems?

Yes, Colin Chapman was involved..
With Brundall from motor racing "JCL Marine Ltd." concentrated 1975 on the development of a new range of italian-styled motor cruisers called the Mirage, Mystere and Mamba. Therefore Colin Chapmann bought the licence from Versil Craft (IT).

This is number 16 of the 16 ever built famous yachts."

Cheers

Fantastic BS! Yes, I remember ads for those too!

Nice spec details - they charged extra for electric anchor winch on a 43-er. Heaven help those who got the "standard" version and had to pull up the chain by hand!

And great photos of tuxedos and long dresses. Looks like a speed dating party*, where there are just intense conversations between separate couples, no talking as a group

I'm trying to work out how much £50,000+VAT in 1976 is in today's terms. Here's some "pub talk" daft economics: when I was a kid i remember my father bought for our first boat a new Merc 20hp outboard in 1975 at £339 RRP inc VAT. Today it's £2800, so an increase 8.25x. 8.25x £50k + VAT is £475k for a 43 footer.

That makes today's boats, which are much better and better engines, look good value, right?

*So I understand. Allegedly.

JIMG, re 'lightly built', the conclusion in the MBY report notes that 'the Mystere is one of the best engineered boats we have tested, it can cope with severe conditions without too much bother and in the looks and comfort department it is well up with the top foreign competition'.

However they also noted that all the switches at the helm consoles had Italian name plates - the only one that the uni-ligual trials team could understand was the one marked 'STOP'.....

They also comment that in 1975 the price of GBP 62,300 for the standard boat with GBP 4,900 of extras was a lot to pay for, yet it compared well back then with the opposition from the Continent.
And in 1975 VAT was 25%.........

I would agree with JFM that new boats today are much better value!
Perhaps partially due to improvements in the production engineering aspects, along with improved materials and engines?

I remember a report in MBY in a later issue about this, I think a boat may have even sank as a result. It is all a bit dim and distant now, so I could be wrong!

I think only 16 were built,There is a friend of mine in Boston who uses his Mystere as a commercial trip boat making regular trips into the Wash ClickyMystere Boat trips
I think it seems to be built like a brick.........

Not wanting to be picky, but I would like to know how he got a 43ft FB boat coded for 25 /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

No idea but if you look at the site I think there are about 10
on the flybridge
The passengers are mainly "Twitchers"do they weigh less?

Yeah, amazing. She does have a big liferaft on the foredeck plus 1m high rails all round and on the flybr. But I would guess she was coded years ago under the old rules, and has been grandfathered by being continuously coded since. These days under the current code I don't think 25 peeps is possible.

Also she might be in a very low distance category, like 5 miles from safe haven or whatever the lowest one is, which makes the rules a bit lighter touch

Anyway, on that coded Mystere website there's a link to this page all about Marauder, Mamba, Moonraker Mirage and Mystere. The chap says there are 7 Marauders, one in France (which I think I've seen but can't remeber where) and none in UK

Generally only used by birdwatchers in the Wash so you may be right with the 5 mile limit,She's very stable as a 16 tonne displacement with a 14'beam would suggest and a wake that a jetskier would die for /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifalthoug not as popular when she comes back to her moorings in the Witham
