Hi all,

New to the site.

I'm looking for a mooring for next year in and around Mylor. My boat is currently in Plymouth but I moved to Cornwall last year and would love to relocate it with me so that I can do some of the racing series next season in and around the area.

I'd appreciate it if anyone knows of anywhere that would be worth considering, advice or leads? I've joined some waiting lists but all seem to leave you feeling very much in the dark.

My boat is an 34ft with a draft of 1.9m.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rob,
Whereabouts do you live now? I live near Mylor.
As you know, deep water moorings coming available around here are like hens' teeth. Try talking to or joining a few clubs as many have their own moorings - Truro Boat Owners, Restronguet Sailing Club, Royal Cornwall, Mylor Yacht Club. Penpol Boat yard have a mooring or two that they let out here in Restronguet Creek that would handle your boat.

I agree with Farmer Piles, you will want to get involved in a club to suss out the best racing (for you) anyway. Always better to go in person have a drink at the bar and chat to find out who you need to contact. On line registration is often a dead duck because people are busy and a bit fed up of frivolous questions.
Depending where you are, I have often seen sub-lets advertised in St Mawes - try the club notice board. Helford have advertised the availability of swinging moorings for a few years now..

If you can show that you are a Cornwall resident, then contact Paul Ferris at Truro Harbour Masters office who have a large number of swing moorings they lease in the Carrick Roads and River Fal. When we needed a larger mooring last year they put me in touch with a current lease holder who was giving up so no waiting list. There were empty moorings around us at the entrance to Pill Creek all year, not sure if they are available or if they would be suitable for you or your boat but worth an enquiry.

It might also be worth speaking to the guys at Mylor Mooring Services who look after a lot of moorings in the area and have previously helped find vacant moorings.

Depending on what side of the river you now live, St Just and St Mawes are other options.

Just to add to the above, Truro Boat Owners’ Association and Truro HM, despite their names, have moorings at Mylor. Mylor YC has moorings certainly, but I don’t think they’ll take 1.9m draft. Restronguet SC, I don’t know.

Our draft is 1.4 and with a mooring at the edge of the channel, at the lowest spring tides we’ve still had 3m below the keel, so it’s definitely worth asking.

I was referring (post #6) to a draft restriction on Mylor Yacht CLUB moorings, not to be confused with any of the others such as Mylor Yacht HARBOUR. I’ve checked, and the CLUB moorings are indeed limited to a draft of 1.6m according to the Club’s website. The OP would be welcome to join the Club of course, but his boat’s draft would preclude allocation of a Club mooring.

From Rosudgeon Helford may be an option. The river is a bit restrictive compared to Carrick roads.
Thanks for your reply. As my partner and I have been involved in racing on others boats in the Carrick Roads this season and doing Falmouth week in ours out of Mylor on a borrowed mooring we very much have our hearts set on basing the boat close by. Hopefully one of the recommendations you useful folk have provided can come good.

We walked around the Museum quays and Town quay this week. I first fished out of Falmouth in 1972, remarked on the huge difference now. Where has all that leisure based money come from? We used to moor up to PoW and haul the trawl out on the pier for mending, park on the roadside. We could find mooring spaces all around the water, some even free. As recently as 1995 I got a mooring in Town Quay for five months of the winter, inc parking, for £165. In the mid seventies Town Quay basin was occasionally jammed full with mackerel boats. No FVs there now. No one would have dreamed of having moorings outside Mylor Yacht Harbour as they are now, too exposed.
Local knowledge/connection is king.
Good luck with it.
