As an Englishman…I have a high tolerance for poor highway maintenance…..but f… me dead, the roads and highways in Italy are a friggin nightmare 😳

I agree. Great thing to be able to change your plans. There is a lively music scene in Toulouse too. If you go to Bordeaux you will find that the Canal lateral de la Garonne is much less touristic than the Canal du Midi. Moissac is a nice little town and you can go on the river Tarn. Only a little stretch is navigable but it’s well worth it. Look out for the submerged dam though. And then there are the two rivers Lot and Baise that can be accessed at Buzet. The Baise has limited draft and to get to the Lot you have to navigate on the Garonne and get a pilot. I went there in April with strong currents which was a little scary but I think in summer it should be fine. Both rivers are worth the detour in my opinion.
So many options...
I could carry on out the end of the Garonne and up the coast to La Rochelle...
But I need something to do next year :)

Don’t worry about it….France is so big…with so many wonderful things to see…you will never run out of places worth visiting

Oh, I have so many pictures like that including one of my favourites of my late wife with that castel on the hill in the background
If you have time it is well worth going up the Torri dei Lamberti, fantastic views from there and there is a lift, Unlike the one in Siena where I nearly expired climbing the stairs.

Just wear the sackcloth and pretend you're a Hebrew slave
What happens when the sack cloth doesn't want to be worn by Bouba ?
It was worse than that….we go to the gate and the usher says there’s a dress code for the posh seats…no shorts ! (Only for the men incidentally)…the wife said, we weren’t told that…he said, it’s on the ticket see (as he points to a drawing of a pair of shorts with a line through them….well, who could have guessed that is what it meant ?)..I say, but I just come from France and I didn’t bring any long trousers…he said, go to gate 10 and they will sell you a pair !
Gate 10 was the gift shop…I barged through the line of shoppers and said, do you have long trousers ? The man in the gift shop said, step behind the curtain….he then looked me up and down and went straight for the fattest pants with the shortest leg…I quickly changed…and he said, thirty euros…I said, can I bring them back for a refund ?…he said, no
So I own a flimsy pair of trousers with a draw string for €30
