Have to say now my favourite boating place, very lovely scenery plus the kids love it.

Thanks rbcoomer were mainly in the bay, brixham and around to babacombe, have not gone further as i ve been told that it can get a bit rough, and we allways have the kids aged 2 and 3 with us, and i dont want to s..t them up.

We would love to do a dartmouth run but im still nervious of it, hence why i would like a plotter to help with the journey, secondly trying to get to grips with my petrol consumption being a v6 she a bit thirsty so we dont go over half throttle, at full throttle she can do 53 knotts.

hopefully down there again this saturday as the weather looks good, torquay is a lovely place and its nice getting to know the staff in the harbour office and some of the locals boaty people. great place.

Like most places the headlands can be a bit 'active', but Dartmouth certainly well worth the effort. I usually launch from Teignmouth (free slipway :D), but the sand bar can be lively in Easterlies. I'm hoping to get as far as Salcombe and Lyme Regis - eventually! Small steps is certainly key as it builds up knowledge somewhat. Might be out this weekend ourselves so will keep an eye out for you.

Yeh will keep my eye out for you, we will be in the bay somewhere or brixham, have been busting all the weather sites tonight and according to windfinder & metoffice the only good day is sat, winds are dropping and full sun. I work a 4 on 4 off shift so this is my last full weekend off.

come on saturday stay good please please,

used to have a fletcher a 1992 gto with a mercury o/B v6, spent hours on her lovely boat, but ending up haveing lots of niggles on the engine and it did not like going slow it would fuel up.

The Fletchers are great boats, but ours is a little small for most of what we want to do (14'), a little underpowered (30hp) and still in need of quite a bit of work (seat trim, gel coat etc). Engine is also a bit temperamental and has resulted in some sticky moments! (sorted I think)

I'm currently gathering funds for a bigger version - 21' inboard as project #2! :o Will post more in a few weeks if all goes to plan... :D

I was going to say "nice video, shame about the music", but at around the ten minute mark, I was tapping my foot to whatever tune it was :o

Great video!! got to admit i put it on mute...sorry:o. That cove looks fantastic. I'll be getting the chart out for that one...bit of a trek for us tho, maybe when i feel confident enough eh?! Here's hoping :). Don't know about anyone else but I find footage like that really inspiring, thanks Mark.

Thanks for all the nice comments:)

Elbery Cove that day was lush:cool: hot and calm and sea very tranquil, went for a splash and swim which was lovely and cooling!!. elbery is a great place to chill(not with kids on board thou).

Thanks again , have to admit the video has become my daily boat fix porn:p, due to this rubbish July weather

I can understand your concerns at "leaving" the bay but if you wait for a quiet day you will find the trip very easy.

Why not stick your nose out past Berry Head and if you are happy with the conditions then go for it! You can literally see the Mew Stone off Dartmouth once you you round Berry Head.

Not sure about the fuel required, but there is petrol on the Dartmouth fuel barge.

If you are happy with the required course on your paper chart then you will be able to navigate by eye to the Mewstone and then stay outside the cardinals and you are there.

Alternatively take the trip boat around and see for yourself and show your wife that it is straight forward.

Good Luck!!

Jim

yeh will do the dartmouth run hopefully soon, i should not be worried realy when lisilou's has posted a thread to come over from hamble, :eek:WOW thats a challenge and a great one, more balls than me:(. mind i work over southampton alot and across to cowes and its also a lovely area for boating, i did my rya training in the solent and my god what a busy F..k..g place:eek::eek::eek:, mad boaters area, when you have 40-50ft cruisers motoring past your at 25 knots leaving a small tidal wave behind them ready to sink my small 21 ft er.

Thanks again for the nice comments,:D i hopefully have shown in the vid that boating is all about pleasure and experience and enjoying the absolutly brilliant cost line we have along the south coast. and i am sure glad i live were i am and i am able to enjoy what i have near me. the weather may be s..t but england is great.;);)

Boating is a passion and an ilness because it never leaves you the pull of sea,

Great video and very familiar territory! Cant believe how empty the cove was. On a day like that its often packed - sometimes you cannot get in! I liked the music, with that and your ever changing colour boat at the end, it was very entertaining. Just a thought about you getting around to the Dart, why not go with another boat on your first trip. Great fun buzzing along with other boats and there are plenty of places up the Dart to stop for a break/picnic. As someone has said, once you done it, you'll wonder why you were worried. The good thing is that you can nip across the bay up to Berry Head, have a look and if you dont like it or its lumping up too much, just turn about and come back.

Very wise words on the cruising in company! A friend and I setup the South West Fletcher Boat Rally with exactly this in mind - link in signature. We picked Fletcher because that's what we both had and they are popular first boats (and British which seemed something worth celebrating!). It was my first boat and I quickly realised that there were others in a similar situation - i.e. wanting to get out but perhaps unsure of abilities etc. We perhaps should have done a South West Sportsboat Rally instead, but not having ever organised anything like it, were concerned about scale, costs and logistics! (Torquay HM would have had a big headache if 100 boats had descended on the harbour.) Torbay lends itself well to this type of event as the waters are largely sheltered (as Marks video shows) and yet there is wider cruising and great locations in easy reach which are fantastic for confidence building. There are also multiple launch locations in easy reach and a number of marina's within 10-15 miles. We are planning more group trips over 2-4 days next year.

If anyone is up for the idea of a broader rally - say Mobos up to 25' or 30'(?) - annually in Torbay, please feel free to send me a PM. If there's enough interest, I'll look into it for 2012!

As a guide, the SWFBR was attended by approximately 25 boats of which 23 were Fletchers (including ours and Fletcher themselves). We learned a great deal from this years and the 2012 one will be bigger and better... :) We made efforts to ensure the 2011 event was free apart from everyone covering their own launch etc, but for 2012 we are opting for the 'luxury' of MDL's events pontoon at Brixham - hopefully sponsored but may need a small registration to cover costs. This gives us more opportunity to embark/disembark easily and access facilities in the town, plus offers a sheltered base where everyone can look at boats and perhaps plan their next purchase! It also helps to talk to other owners rather than salespeople on the day-to-day ownership, pluses and minuses... There will be a BBQ on the beach at Elberry which will be pretty much at cost (we won't make a profit, but will pay a chef)

I'm sure something similar for Forumites could be possible...?

hi ripster
If i could find someone to go with yeh that is a good idea, i could allways follow the dart princess over to dartmouth but it goes a little slow for me and a petrol v6 engine, (not that i like speed mine)

May be i will follow some one around, or if some one is going around from this forum, but i am now out of my weekend this saturday is my last off from work, so will have to wait 4 further weekends till im back in with my weekends off, but then will be on the boat in the week normally a wed or fri. plus i think the first trip should be done with out the children onboard(reduce the stress a little). But i did say this year i have to do the passage. i set 1 challenge each year to complete with the boat and that is 2011 challenge.

thanks for likeing the vid. Great porn:D:D:D

see what this saturday brings weather still ok all ready to bring here down

I love a home video :D Love the scenery and boat too;) that was the area i had hoped to trailer my boat this year but wanted to build my confidence and be sure of the reliability, all of which are coming together nicely.

Is there a place to launch there and does the place to 2 week berths? In the olden days i used to take my inflatable down to devon and cornwall and the thing i miss being here in the Solent is that a few hundred meters from shore, shut the engine off and the silence litterally is deafaning, quite a wierd sensory feeling:cool:

rbcoomer that is a great idea, will join your club now if you allow non fletcher boats, sw

would look great, and make it availble to any one with a boat and an engine big or small, 500 quid or a 500.000 quid

:D:D:D Now THAT would be a logistical headache!

I'm quite happy to look at creating a Forum Rally down here if there's a demand. We're already doing some mini-meets for the SWFBR, and have done one already last month to look at suitability for smaller boats to do runs to Dartmouth etc using a couple of 14's (testing ahead of next years event!). We're looking to do another in late August and one in September - probably only 4 boats, but you'd be welcome to join us. When I know the dates I can send you a PM - probably 2 x 14', a 19' and a 21'. We'll certainly do around Torbay, Dartmouth/Start Bay and perhaps Salcombe and/or Topsham depending on sea state.

As others have said, cruising in company of other boats can be great fun and also adds a bit of extra safety/reassurance.

The MBM Cruising Club is a great idea and I would love to do, but current boat is too small for the waters and range they do - perhaps in a few years...

hi warpa
there are slip ways all round the area, from brixham-paigton-torquay- and round the bay at teignmouth.

my cost for the boat and trailer inc car park is £11 to launch, £5 trailer park £7 car park all day

Im real happy with torquay, as there plenty of space, you can wash and flush your boat afterwords, toilets and showers just behind slip way.

if your new then come on down its highly recommended and the bay is very safe as long as you dont venture out past the two end points of hope nose or berry head you will be ok, another nice place to anchor is meadfoot beach/cove just 7-10 min past torquay before you get to thatchers rock.

the harbour master office you can pick up for free the tor bay navigation map, very handy to keep on the boat.

If we are down there we will be happy to help you or show you the rops. there are locals in this forum that can give you more info on the other slips, im not to sure so would rather not give you wrong information
