My sterndrive's buggered - help please

Gary

Really sorry to hear. we have similar... checked gearbox this morning after using boat yesterday and found gearbox oil 2.5litres down, was full of oil yesterday.... don't you just hate boats sometimes...

thanks TK:cool: Roy, I'll do some reading up in additon to what I did a year or so ago.. recall the need tool ensure things are seated correctly hence the alignment tool and something (a tube) to drive home the bearing from the outside race... first job is to go and have a looksee inside the drive, could point to something completely different of course... end game is to get the boat back in the water in the most expeditious manner possible without breaking the bank..

p.s. friends tend to surface when something goes wrong, always the same few who help out on these forums, for which I am incredibly grateful:cool:

Jeez... sorry to hear that... Steve pointed your boat out when we overnighted in Mercury, will look in on you next time we're over there and help out if I'm able to

Not being flippent, where did it go ?

doesn't sound flippent at all, the oil is now in an oil absorbent mat placed under the gearbox... (this isn't the first time its happened). But this is going to sound even more odd, I can't locate where the bloody oil is coming out! seems to escape in the night after usage and leave no evidence...

Thanks Gary, its a bug*er just like your sterndrive problem. Sorry I couldn't get down to the boat on Friday and Saturday, but was elsewhere. I did see Steve from afar Sunday pm and did give him a wave, but the old sods eye sight must not be what it was as he just ignored me...;):D

we shot straight out to see the Balmoral out so didn't have time to say hello and when we returned he was no where to be seen so I assume he had run before the weather closed in.

Last time i used Crosshouse (which was a few years ago) there were some pretty big concrete blocks down the bottom end so would try and do it top of the tide rather than bottom of the tide!

hope its not as bad as you fear Gary, let us know if we can do anything!

Sounds gimbal bearing. Have you put the boat in gear with the leg somewhere in the trailer tilt range. That can knock the bearing out. I think all will become clear when you get the leg off.

Good luck and fingers crossed for you. :)

thanks for the advice.. I did have the trim out a fair bit at 4500 rpm when I went for the run with Steve (Dunstable Steve) but nothing unusual, just up to the first mark on the trim gauge... that said, the back end of last season we grounded (in mud at near zero knts as we worked our way in to the berth) round the back of Calshot spit so needed to take the leg up alot higher than usual but all seemed fine on the next run out.

should of bought a proper boat with shaft ect
as those leg things are always going wrong.

Anything is possible. If the bearing got knocked a bit out of line it can "grip" on the shaft at anytime and spin in the housing and thats that. You will know if thats happened as the bearing will be loose and score marks on the inside of the housing. The one I saw, the bearing came out still on the shaft as we pulled off the leg!!!!!

thanks for the advice buddy. starting to make arrangements now but have some juggling to do.. conveniently forgot I've a major change occuring this weekend in one of the projects which'll not help as I've sold them PM time during the work which'll likely be me picking up the effort to deliver against it.. spanner in one hand and mobile in tuther I reckon

Hi Gary. Sorry, can't offer any easy words of wisdom on here. I think it is just a case of dismantling until you find the root cause. Good luck with it all.

hi Paul, on the phone so cant post all the details.. Good progress made today.. boat out the water and sterndrive off with cause identified.. Pictures and details to follow when back online proper. Suffice to say, Roy's been a massive help.. One of the good guys! Should be back in the water in a couple of weeks after repairs. Lucky it was caught now, could have been MUCH worse
