My Princess 32 - seaworthy?

Finally, make sure you have a decent anchor & chain in case you fail to make a tide gate or want a rest spell overnight somewhere.

Basically, you need to passage plan like a yottie! With "escape plans" and making max use of tides & counter currents & avoiding any overfalls etc. I cruise at 4-5kts and my best speed is 6-7kts under engine &, when sailing, my passage plans assume a 3kt average.

Sounds like you need to clean out the heat exchanger and check the impellor and well, it should run at a steady temperature all day long! its pretty dangerous taking the boat out to sea if you don't think its running perfectly, RYA reports are that most call outs are caused by engines breaking down.

Good luck with the trip,

Barry

Nice trick if you can you get 5 knots SOG regardless of tidal rate and direction!

Sorry to be pedantic, but I assume you mean speed through the water (ie log speed) rather than SOG (GPS speed)?

I have a P31 with twin Perkins, I get at least 7 knts on one engine.
Hire boats are normally governed to slow them down, Prop size ect, what revs will the engine reach both in gear and out?
For the record i use 14 x 10 and get 3700 rpm max under load.

Re restriction of engine hp on a p32 @ caleys

Hi,i may be able to fill you in on this one,as well as being a boat owner our family decided to hire a 35ft hire boat on the caladonian canal scotland, this we carried out from caley cruisers in the summer of 2006.Having studied the brouchers it was the one called a brodie class that was the p32,these were mainly fitted with a single 75hp volvo penta inboard, the hp stated for the brodie class was 60hp indicating that they would have restricted them, hope this helps.

HI I HAVE A PRINCESS 32 WITH TWIN ADQ21 WE HAVE BEEN UP THE EAST COAST AS FAR AS THE HUMBER DOWN THE THAMES AS FAR AS WINDSOR UP TO WOODBRIDGE YARMOUTH MEDWAY. FLAT OUT AT 3500 REVS I GET 10 KNOTS 6 AGAINST THE TIDE, I USALLY RUN AT ABOUT 3000 REVS GIVING ME 7 TO 8 KNOTS .WE HAVE BEEN COUGHT OUT IN FORCE 7 ONCE OR TWICE THOUGH NOT PLESENT I NEVER FELT IN ANY DANGER IN FACT SHE DID IT QUITE WELL. .iTS A BIT OF HARD WORK ON OUTDRIVES IN CROSS WINDS KEEPING ON CORSE SOMETIMES.THE ONLY THING I WOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT IS LOOSING THE ENGINE HAVING SAID THAT THERES A LOT OF SINGLE ENGINE BOATS DOING COASTEL CRUISING.OUR MARINA WAS TICHMARSH FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS IT TOOK US 9 HR TO ST KATS WITH THE TIDE.

Once apon a time

Once apon a time this sort of boat with this sort of engine able to do this sort of speed was basically what everybody had.Over the years as engine power increased, mainly due to deisel being available at ridiculously low prices, boats got fatter and faster,to the extent that unless your 500hp monster flybridge could keep up 25 knots, your boat was regarded as unsuitable for long distance cruising off shore.Whisper it...Unsafe even!
How did all those old boys survive all those years ago with only a weedy single 50hp engine .
Eyebrows were raised recently at my club when a member recently got back from Calais after an extended canal cruise in his Profile 33.
The last part of the journey across the channel and back up to the Mudway was on only 50hp.The other engine having conked out in France.:)

My P32 with single 80 HP Mermaid, will do 9.1knots at 2000 rpm, and cruises at 1500 at 6.5 knots, doing 5.3 knots in still water at 1200 rpm - I would not expect the 75 hp lump of yours to do too much less - readings are SOG on the GPS not through the water

This is what you are looking at roughly 85 miles, take lots of sandwiches, and tea. Get the weather right and you will have a nice three days.

These were and are sea-boats. Get the engine sorted and you will be able to cruise at 8 knots all day long. Nothing wrong with going to sea in a single engine boat as long as the maintenance is up to scratch. Bit like single engine aircraft - they don't like being stuck up there all day!
