My new project... MFV Elizmor

When I had mine, the real party trick was to start the engine by getting enough way on under sail.

Like a jump-start? Using the vessel's wash, passing over the prop to generate shaft rotation? How often did it work? How fast was necessary?

It sounds as though a YBW collective to create a rig for Elizmor is about to be born... who am I to object :D

It would help to have a side plan-view of the vessel with dimensions. Have you any idea what weight, and where exactly in the hull the ballast is?

My old fishingvessel was 20x6m in 2" oak planking on oak frame.
The original papers said that the hull was 56 ton.(do not remember if engine was included)
Then the barlast , 8000l diesel , a wet hull and all the stuff onboard.

The people that pulled my vessel on the slip said close to 100 ton.

So to be fair I don´n know.

She's 16 x 5m, 1 1/2" larch on oak. Her registered tonnage is 37t but I know that doesn't mean weight.

I just spoke to the lifting guy as you've made me nervous now (:p) and there is allowance for SWL 60t at pickup at 52t at drop off so hopefully we will be good.

I've just had a cubic metre of wood delivered onto the boat so I'll make sure to burn through that, and empty the water tank, and drink all the beer in the fridge (;)) before the lift!

Hi Ellie I'm trying to post a photo of a fishing boat project we took on, a Grimsby side trawler. Yours is more realistic! Try 70 tons of fuel to fill her up, 15' draught, all good clean fun! cheers Jerry

Another new post on the blog! Yesterday I had a great adventure with a friend, picking up an extraordinary amount of perfect mooring rope for Elizmor. See more here:

I've got a couple of little jobs to do today (one of which is good fun and I will upload a photo when it's finished tonight), and also need to go and speak to the marina about Elizmor's launch.

That is a great boat you have there Ellie have just seen the thread today and read it all in one go and had a look at your blog.I also have spent an hour on the wooden boat for sail site.Good job i don't have any spare money or i may have rush out and buy one.:) Looking forward to reading more in the future good look with your travels.

...
Say hello to Elizmor, a 53ft wooden ex-Scottish MFV. She was built in 1948 and has been skilfully converted into a liveaboard over the past 25 years. Elizmor is a ship in comparison to Miley - complete with bath, Rayburn, wood burning stove, microwave, fridge/freezer and washing machine! Not to mention the S P A C E! Most importantly, she still retains her sea-going features, including a fully-founded engine room complete with Gardner 6LX in full working order...
Congrats ! Wondered what you'd been talking about with occasional merntions of huge wooden boats recently :-)

Good luck with her,

Boo2

Re anchors: There is a sort of ship/boat scrap yard that a friend near Plymouth has got stuff from, including an anchor that he cannot lift by hand. They get a lot of bits from breakers yards in India.
I will give him a buzz to get the location.
