My new covers - advice please

Depends on what your original agreement was and how far away from your boat they are!

For me........ fitting is part of the job and I wouldn't be paying anything until they fitted them, but, you may have used somebody 200 miles away. If it is a local firm, tell them to keep the covers if they wont fit them.

Tell us more.

Covers bought form the people who supply Sealine with their original covers and upholstery (fibratrim). Incredibly good supply only price and the extra charge for fitting still makes then hundreds cheaper than alternative suppliers. So I'm not unhappy about the price.

I just want to know how hard they are to fit. I'll take care, but it is a really skilled job that I might muck up?

£320.44 ? sounds like a figure out of a hat. I just got new covers made. Irish Spars came and spent a lot of time getting them perfect. I wouldn't have taken on the finish fit and possibly made a mess of their good work. If there is a woopsie while fitting it should be their problem, not yours. Did they not include fiting in your original price ?. if not let them keep the covers and find a reputable company to make ones that they know will fit.

If you read more carefully you will see that he bought them on a supply only price! They will have made them from the pattern for that boat model, the reason why they are so much cheaper as all the pattern work has been done.

As to having them fitted, the cost is already "hundreds cheaper" even with fitting and it is here that I agree with you that fitting oneself unless you know exactly what you are about seems rather an uneconomic thing to do if things go wrong.

Frankly seems a no brainer to me - have them fitted.

Been down the same route with Sealine / Fibratrim cover. On no account try fitting yourself.... you will regret it for ever more. Best option is to pay the extra and get them to fit it, then its their responsibilty for any cock ups in fitting or manufacture. Or as a second option get local company to do so, but this is unlikely to be any cheaper any way.

>is it a skilled job that I might muck up

It's s skilled job that you will almost definitely muck up the first time, and probably the second. By the third set of covers, you stand a good chance of getting it right.

Have to agree having experienced new covers!
Stump up the dosh else it will cost you more in the long term.
They will do a much better job than you, its what they do.

Am I mising something here, but isin't fitting just applying them to the boat? Or is there further trimming/nip-tucking to do?

The covers just come as the canvas plus the windows, without any of the poppers fitted. Getting the right tension in the canvas & positioning the poppers to your boat is where the skill is.

Ah ok, makes a lot more sense now.

TBH while it seems like a lot of money, i'd be paying for that to be done professionally

Get them fitted by fibretrim , got new covers 2006 off same , local guy to fit , make a mess of it. they are specialists worththe money , trust me. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hiya
I too had a tonneau cover made by fibretrim for my S37 and because my boat is in Spain had it fitted by a local out there. It cost me about £100
I have some advice for you.
You will need a centre ring or the cover will just fill up with water. Your fitter will be able to do this modification. It will seem nice and tight when new but will soon sag.
I keep my table up which also helps to support the cover when it sags, however the slight movement of the cover over time has worn away a bit of the blue covering (yours may be the GRP table) I just leave a towel over the table now.
The next is really important. The tonneau goes over the seat back at the stern and after a few months will stain your seat backs blue. Fortunately after much scrubbing and sunlight bleaching they have come back ok but now I cover the seat backs with thick clear plastic sheeting.
Hope all this helps
David

they told me the original tonneaus were made of PVC and let me choose that or canvas for the same price.

If it is the original spec cover it will be an unbeatable price. I await delivery with trepidation.......

And I'll report back.

Your tonneau can't be made of solution dyed acrylic then, as this would not bleed. Is this why Fibretrim are cheap, they use cheaper dyed materials?

[/ QUOTE ]
It wasn't really the dye coming out but the scuffing of the tonneau material on the seat backs and of course because the material is blue, this transfers. The cover material used by Fibretrim and in consequence by Sealine is of excellent quality and extreemely hard wearing. I don't think they are cheap either.

So they turned up to fit them today. Couldn't stay till it was finished as I was interviewing for a new PA but I was seriously impressed by the individual and the quality - far far better in both design and finish than the ones I had. If I'd got anyone else in they'd probably have copied what I had. The old ones had 6 zips and 4 panels, the proper sealine ones just 2 panels and 2 zips - far easier to fit.

Unfortunately yesterday I received a note from Fibratrim to say they were ceasing trading, but honouring all orders.

Everyone I've dealt with in the company has been superb. What a shame.

OK fitted - so I'm reporting back.

What an improvement. They even supplied the cover to clip on to the arch when the covers are back, which I hadn't ordered. I' so glad i ordered the proper Sealine pattern.

Full set of covers 7 hundred and something quid. The tonneau seems expensive in comparison, but still cheaper than everywhere else, 4 hundred and something.

And Danny who came to fit it was a star and did a great job. Well worth the money.

What a shame they're closing.
