With the help of forum contributor "Althorne", my acquisition, a retired Watson 47 lifeboat, moved this weekend from Harwich to Dover and then on to Brighton. Had an overcharging problem that bought us to a halt off Royal Sovereign and after a temporary fix we went on to Brighton. Now parked in marina awaiting permanent fix.

Bit of rain, bit of fog, but actually wonderful weather for it, and included a few deck-chair moments along the way.

Think you'd better get back to Harwich and do the job proper. What do you mean about a little overcharging problem?? We want disasters, ship wrecks, or at least a rescue. Good luck anyway but please try better next time../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Yes, that was the end of our first little passage from Southwold to Levington, mainly to get her out of Southwold and to learn a little. We left Southwold at about 04.00 Bank Holiday Saturday and arrived Levington around breakfast where we left her for the week.

Thought so - very tidy looking craft!
We were out from Levington on Sunday for a run to Southwold and back. Shame we missed you. Did you get a chance to sample the Adnams in the Harbour Inn before you left?!

I think I'm forbidden by the RNLI from doing rescues, though perhaps it would be a bit extreme to pass by a glug glug and say "sorry old boy, can't help, the lifeboat will be along in an hour or three".

If that's the place up the lane to the "T" and left I have eaten there before and found it excellent, but on this occcasion I had a vehicle left at Southwold to collect so time was not on my side.

Come on..................The whole point of having an ex lifeboat is to have a detailed history of her and where she served who she rescued you should be able to say where she was on any given day of her life.......................share the info!!!!

Can I commend to you Membership of the Lifeboat Enthusiasts Society, the ultimate destination in Anorak World, you'd love it!

Actually she was the Salcombe lifeboat from 1962 to 1989, she is the Sister Ship to the Penlee boat Solomon Browne that was lost with all hands, and in, I think, 1985 she was pitch poled in storm force winds off Prawle Point, righted and bought all the crew home under her own power.

I'm not sure about fuel consumption, I am reliably informed she should be doing somewhere between 3 and 4 gallons an hour at 8 knots and quite a lot more for her 9.25 design speed. We'll see.

There's a little "port hole" inspection hatch about 9" across in the middle of the engine room hatch, it's amazing the "pull" of air through that if opened at sea, just goes to show how much air 14 litres of slow revving engine swallows.

Always great to see a boat with history. What was her name when she served as a lifeboat? If she rolled and brought home her crew she must be considered to be a lucky boat and it will give you great faith in her.Best of luck with her.
