Further to my plea for help with my Mariner 3.5 (which incidently, turns out to be a Tohatsu!).
Solved the no water problem, the impellor had NO vanes left, no wonder it was a bit feeble last year!
Anyway, got it to bits, only broke one screw, now removed, bought a new impellor no bother locally, BUT.

Now I can not get the leg to slide back on. In the leg there is a tube for the water to connect to, and a rod and clamp for the clutch mechanism, both a fiddle but do,able.
The problem is the spline on the drive shaft won,t enter the female spline on the crank, no obvious damage.
Is there a Knack to getting it to enter, I have given up til the morrow when I will attack the beast again. Any ideas will be gratefully recieved. Bill.

[/ QUOTE ] Who said it was unlikely to be the impellor? Humble pie for tea for someone.

I know the trouble you are having I usually try to set the shaft so that the splines will line up then wriggle a bit as I push the two together, If you can get someone to turn the engine fywheel back and forth a bit it might help.

Took me ages the first time, then it suddenly went in. Wondered what I had broken so took it off again to look /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Have you checked the whole cooling system to ensure you've got ALL the bits of impeller? I suspect you may have to remove part of the block (if it's anything like a 2.5) to get direct access to the block waterways.

Someone will shoot me down I expect (hope so for your sake!) but unless you get everything out, it can easily block up again.

BTW, agree with the poster who suggested turning the prop a bit to align the splines. That's the way to do it, after you've thoroughly greased both sections of course!

Have you tried putting it in gear and turning the prop a bit by hand to line it all up?

Yes Graham, many thanks, done that, it,s very odd, thought I had done the hard bit when I got the broken bolt out! Bill.

Thanks Vic, I plan to dress the spline a bit with a needle file and try again in the morn, most frustrating, thats why I left it while I cool off! Bill.
p.s., I won,t take the bu##er off again!

Jerry Thanks, I will go at it in the morng, I was amazed there were no bits of the old imp in the visible waterways, if, and when, I get it back together I will give it a run before I take the rest to bits. Fully appreciate what you say about bits left inside, but I think for example a gasket set would be more than the little bu##er is worth!!! Next move, dress and grease the spline as you suggest, many thanks. Bill.

Just off to take the dog for a walk before I attack it again, if it goes on I will be carefull not to take it off again!!! will post a progress report later, Bill.

GLAD TIDEINGS, I have got the leg on, and water is flowing in abundance!!!
For reference-

I dressed the spline with a needle file, took off sharp edges and increased the lead on the start of the spline, and greased it, it FLEW ON first try, the proplem then was fiddling to get the discharge tube into the pump while pushing the leg home, then fitting the clamp on the clutch operating rod, when I found my long nosed pliers that operation was eased!
It is runng well.
MANY THANKS to All Who Kindly Helped,
Bill.
