My leg is stuck!

I cannot for the life of me get the lower leg back on my Honda 7.5 outboard and I'm getting a bit frustrated. The driveshaft, water pipe and gear shifter all seem to go on OK, but I can't get it on the last 1/2 inch. Might there be something I have forgotten to do, or does anyone know why it won't go back on?

Have you moved the gear lever? I can't remember if your engine twists the gear selector shaft or push/pulls it to operate? But I know on push/pull models if the selector lever is not in the same position as the gear box was left in, what you describe can happen. OR, is there a hole for the control rod at the top of the leg? I know I spent about an our earlier on this summer trying to put a Yamaha 5hp back together as the gear rod had to fit through a little hole at the top of the leg to make contact with the yoke that operates it. It really was one of those jobs requiring four hands.

It does have a hole for the gear control at the top! It could well be this. I'll check tomorrow (if the weather improves). You may be my saviour, as I was getting so angry with it.

Its a push pull mechanism ITYWF.

Struggling with the same problem myself yesterday. Yamaha 8, and it was the last inch. It seemed to be solid metal to metal contact stopping it going the rest of the way but greasing the splined end of the drive shaft solved it.

You must be careful not to over do the grease . None on the very end of the shaft or that will prevent it going in fully.

It's difficult to get fully splined joints to line up but turning the crankshaft and wriggling a bit should do it.

The first time i took the bottom end off my Evinrude I had a bit of a job getting it back together but suddenly it went home.

I was so afraid I'd broken something I took it apart again to check !

Yep The measure fits in with the drive shaft idea. How about putting it in gear and rotating the prop whilst trying to mate?

Because until its fully mated and the shift rod reconnected the gear change wont work

BUT
its one where the wedge shaped end bit on the shift rod presses a plunger in the end of the prop shaft to operate the spring loaded clutch dog.

While its apart and until the shift rod is connected it will in fact be in forward gear so... just rotate the prop a bit ... or the crankshaft via the flywheel

That's all I required in my post. I don't need him to engage gear with the gearshift. You seem to have made an objection from thin air.

Sorry I though that when you said, "How about putting it in gear .... ", you meant, " how about putting it in gear".
