I tried to change the impeller in my Yanmar 1GM10 today but the new one wouldn't fit. It seemed like the hole was too tight and it would go on about halfway but no more. I put the old one back in and it went in easily. The new one is a Johnson branded one and it was in my spares box so I don't know where it was bought. I'm loathe to buy a new one when I have a new on already so should I try to file the hole a bit bigger or is this a terrible idea?

It sounds as if you are talking about the hole in the centre of the impeller. If it looks the same in overall dimensions as the currently fitted impeller and goes on half way it sounds as if it's the crosspiece which locks the impeller to the shaft which is too thick, assuming that you are getting the alignment correct.

If the crosspiece is the wrong dimension there is probably little you can do about it.

It shouldn't be that difficult, if your sure you have the right spare then try a bit of washing up liquid to lubricate it in to place.

If not don't risk doing any really expensive damage just to save the relatively small cost of a new genuine impellor.

Filing the body of the pump will ruin it for sure.

I was thinking of filing the hole in impeller rather than the pump housing.

It seems to be the correct part but it does seem to be the flat part that locks it on that's the problem. I will try some fairy liquid and see if that dos the job tomorrow.

From memory the Igm 10 part no finishes 0001 ( asap supplies) put a cable tie around he blades slide it in and slip it off (oh urr)

Just something I was told recently, it doesn't matter if the impeller on outboards is put in with the vanes in reverse it will sort its self out once the engine is started again. This from a prominent Yamaha service centre.
