My girlfriend\'s strip show

So, my girlfriend strips most of the varnish from the washboard with Nitromors, and then starts sanding. And keeps on sanding - very keen to do a good job, you see. Two lighter patches start to appear, get bigger, and then she realises she's thru the teak veneer and down to ply. Oh dear - the piebald look. Only made worse by slapping on a few coats of varnish.
What to do? Strip off the new varnish next year and use teak wood stain on the exposed ply to try to get it back to the colour of the rest of the washboard? Strip the whole washboard back to the ply and then stain? Or can I re-veneer?
Whadya think?

Find a girlfriend with a not so strong right hand /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re-veneer. Will require sanding to a flat and even surface first otherwise end result wont look right.

Re: My girlfriend\'s strip show

Certainly, strip the whole washboard back, stain and flow-coat with clear epoxy. See the Gougeon brothers' book from Wessex Resins and most book-chandlers. That should give a pleasing effect.

While you're at it, make up a polycarbonate/Perspex/Lexan substitute for those rainy days below - it can live under a berth cushion.

Then compliment her for the good idea - a girlfriend who will get her hands dirty helping with boat maintenance is worth her weight in silverware......

Re: My girlfriend\'s strip show

Veneer is thin ( 0.6 mm ) so does need a bit of skill to stick down flat. However you might be able to pick up a bit of thin teak ply which is a reasonable match to other boards and cramp it down using another thicker board to even out the pressure. Staining would be difficult to get an even tint, but then you might not be all that fussed. Or - you could chuck it away and replace with a chunk of acrylic for extra light.

Jeeeez - couldn't I spend my winter learning to ski or even learning to love Gordon Brown's funny sucky mouthy thing?
May have to bodge with teak stain.

Re: My girlfriend\'s strip show

Remove any bits and so long as it is double sided turn it around so the damaged surface is inside.

If this isnt practical it wil almost certainly be easier to knock up new boards than re veneer.

Dont forget that if you do re veneer it will be too thick to run in the slots unless you stop short of the edges!
