Re: It\'s sailors like you...

Trouble is TK, there are people like that.
I knew a Motorboater (34ft). Who in the late 80s had on board 2 laps tops with plotters and disc charts, 2 Deccas and 2 GPS's along with radar etc etc and rounded it of with a satellite dish for his TV.
He could go to France on the ferry and have his boat meet him there.

Re: Woman with boat

Nope
not interested in Porsche's and am probably more impressed with an incredible block paved drive
A legless woman would come in handy, that way she is always where you put her down. Now where did i leave.......

There's an old adage in the industry I'm in - if it aint broke don't fix it . There's no compulsion to change your VHF and as someone has already mentioned when it does eventually pack up , the one you replace it with will be DSC compatible. Is DSC a good thing ? From what I've read about so far , it seems a bit of a disaster area. Mind you can any system that will stop the endless " Solent Coastguard the is yacht Braindead , radio check please , over " messages be totally bad ? As Ken has already said you can hear the bloody things at the other end of the Channel. The only reason I don't turn mine off is the fact that I might miss a Mayday. Totally agree about the rest of your thingy though I'm a bit of a hypocrite. You do have a choice of a huge amount of gear for a boat but with a compass and GPS and nothing else you can sail round the world. Chart plotters ? Wind Instruments ? Radar ? You pays your money you takes your choice - and chance. In In ST last month , they wrote about the poor skipper who drowned when his boat hit the rocks at the entrance to Plymouth harbour. One of the reasons the poor man's navigation was wonky was because they had crossed the Channel in a gale , the crew were inexperienced and nobody could stay at the chart table long enough to properly navigate. ST argued that if the skipper had a plotter available in the cockpit it might have saved the boat and the skipper's life. So maybe it does have some use . I'm a hypocrite because I have radar , chart plotter etc. and have great fun using it. But I could get by without them - but chose not to.

Was he the cabin boy who used to go off to the captains cabin with Seamen Stains and Master Bates.

Strange thing ...

Sailing in various areas ... I 'countries', not just around the solent corner !

It is strange that I have a lot of requests for 2nd hand VHF's hand and fixed from a lot of people where I sail ... when they found out that UK is going DSC etc. the demand started for me to bring back the old sets !!

I think it's disgusting that mud berth boats of such a vintage are even allowed to float out onto our waters - they should be limited by a 200 metre chain that drags them back in again - especially ones with engines big enough to pull a average size marina behind them. - Leave more room on the water for the more graceful ocean liners in the area! (oh and I've printed off the "women" comments for when you get back, a small fee should see them destroyed!! )

But you would have to go down after it to know your SoG. Much easier to use the aerial and look at it upside down

PS if it had a wide bit on the end you could use it to paddle a tender as well.

I rather fancy these new sails with a thin sheet of foil between the mylar/polyester laminates, which makes a massive reflector, even if not always at the correct angle.

Re: It\'s sailors like you...

You're rather assuming everyone is listening out which, from the other thread, would appear not to be the case.

Even the weather forecast has taken on the speaking clock type of presentation. Perhaps next year we will all have to buy an even newer style DVDSC radio (Digital Voice..etc). you can see the adverts now...."Pre-record your own message, transmit when you want, whether you are there or not".
