My cousins sailing from New York to Londonderry for charity.

"Derry-Londonderry-Doire"! Down here we just call it Derry. That boat could have saved a lot on signwriting:)
But seriously, it is right to question how charity donations are allocated. In Ireland right now , we are having a major scandal regarding charities.

This thread is not going the way I planned lol, but i do understand what you're saying, hey it's called legeonderry as radio ulster would say

I want to know whether your cousin is asking for money solely for the hospice or whether she is also asking for money to pay for a sailing holiday.

So why did you post a link to her donations page?

I honestly don't care what you want to know, I didn't once ask you to sponser her, now please go away.

Despite the rather fractious nature of this thread, I think the question is entirely reasonable: If people are asking others for money towards a worthwhile cause it's incumbent on them to say how much of the total money collected will be given to the nominated charity. For instance, it's not universally known that 'JustGiving' is a commercial body who will deduct their fee and the credit card companies have their share as well. There's nothing wrong with that as it's a very efficient way of collecting and the benefits of collecting on-line far outweigh the costs.

All charity fundraisers need to open about their costs and deductibles. Even the RNLI constantly has to justify the millions it spends raising its funds. In particular, fund raising 'holidays' are in the spotlight as in some cases, the amount raised mainly benefits the event organisers and not the designated charity.

So any fund raiser has a moral (and incidentally, a legal responsibility) to be upfront and answer some simple questions; "How are the costs involved with your fundraising event covered and what percentage of any pound donated eventually gets to your nominated charity?"

Am I missing something here. According to http://www.justgiving.com/samant Its says ALL the money goes direct to the hospice and the site lists contributors with £911 raised so far. A very worthy cause indeed and one to which i will make a small donation as a result of this post. Perhaps others might also subscribe as in the past forum members have listed justgiving as a means of supporting their chosen charities.

You posted a link to her sponsorship page without a note to say "This doesn't apply to JumbleDuck".

I've emailed Clipper Ventures and Swiss Sailing to ask if crew members on "Switzerland" have to pay any fees. I'll report back when/if I get replies.

the point of my post was to support her, not to get pressed ganged by you,

If you could reassure us that, unlike some participants, she is not trying to raise money for her fees, you'd be doing her a great service. I'm afraid that references to the boat sponsor don't really do it, and aggressive responses do her no good at all.

I apologise fore any agressive responses because I really don't mean any harm, please read the first post again, I only meant a good wish to someone doing an Atlantic crossing for charity, my cousin isn't here to defend herself but I promise she's a good girl. Hey maybe you don't like what I say but I will still answer your Mayday and hope you do mine, we might need each other someday. peace out.

Nobody is doubting that your cousin is anything but a "good girl" It just your aggressive response to genuine questions that raise suspicions

Swiss Sailing are very efficient. A reply has come back already:

Swiss Sailing zahlt gar nichts an das Clipper Projekt, weder für Schiff, noch Crew noch sonst etwas.

(Swiss Sailing is paying nothing at all towards the Clipper project, for the boat, for the crew or for anything else)

Sounds like a great deal for Swiss Sailing. High Profile exposure at zero cost, I could do that, Team Stork for the next Clipper Race?

Regarding Sam's situation, her target for the Hospice is £1000, so would not cover her fee anyway, seems kosher to me, she is paying for her trip of a lifetime and trying to raise a bit for a worthy cause as well as raising their profile in the wider world. Strange responses from the OP though.

So the question must be asked who is paying for it all ?? maybe you could ask your cousin Skipper .

I suspect it will turn out that the young lady is indeed just trying to raise money for the charity, but the snotty response to Jumbleducks' perfectly reasonable question was pretty poor, she'd be mortified I'm sure.

And yes we were all asked to contribute, effectively.

When I first saw Jumbleducks' question I thought ' good point ' - there is, or was, for instance a setup where people doing a parachute jump for their own ' fun ' could get it for free if they raised X amount charity sponsorship, and that was my immediate thought here.

I hope she raises squillions for the hospice and has a lot of fun.
