Back before Christmas I mentioned I had had some success heating my workshop with a wood burner made from an old gas bottle and you asked for some photo's. Didn't quite forget but whenever I remembered I never had a camera or phone with me.. that and christmas...oh end of excuses here are my photo's (first attempt so I may have to have a couiple of attempts)...

Excellent....what did you cut it with?
Edit...also before cutting how were you sure there was no gas left...i assume valve open and left upside down?

My mate who is a bit more handy with a welder did it for me, he's actually been asked to do a couple more for other friends now, and he just used a disk cutter.

Yes, just left it upside down with the valve open and then removed the valve with a spanner.

I started looking at log burners for Machine Mart and the like but the cheap ones were all too small and the big ones too expensive.

I only have two sides of the workshop insulated (badly) and the others have gaps you can put your hand through but in the recent cold weather this kept the workshop at 65-70 degs when it was -2 or so outside.

The gas bottle is a pretty heavy duty piece of steel as you will find if you pick up an empty one so I think it will last well. B&Q also sell black high temp paint for about £7 which will stop and external rust and make it look a bit better but I am enjoying the hobo chic look at the moment!

I have been thinking of a MKII from a taller gas bottle and putting an oven in the top for my pasties. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To be sure, you could fill it up with water. Forces any remaining gas out. You could cut it full too, but I'm not sure what the effects of water on an angle grinder (esp. an electric one /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif)

As we seem to be only spitting distance away from each other feel free to call around and have a look at the Mark I if you think it will help with the Mark II.

The only thing I would change is the flue. Mine is around 4" diameter and I think 2" maybe an old exhaust would be fine. Possibly with a butterfly damper in it.

However, progress on building my boat at the weekend has rather limited the use of the logburner....
