I have already a thread regarding engine removal on the site but thought Id start a project thread, as this boat is just that, a project.
I bought it sort of blind with the previous owner having passed away suddenly, and only having been sent some pictures and a brief description.

Its a 1999 Mariah z211 Talari with the 5.7 Mercruiser and Alpha one leg. It lay in a local marina for a few years unused, in the water unfortunately. The bilges had slowly filled over time and the starter had been submerged, causing it to fail.
I was told that the starter had seized and that some teeth had been chewed off the flywheel. This has yet to be confirmed by me. Iv hand turned the engine and cant see any broken teeth or damage but will check again.

Fast forward a while and she was pulled from the marina and drained, and let sit on her trailer untouched. Someone removed the starter and left it at that. I found a picture of her not long out of the water on google street view when doing some research :)

Here is the pictures of her as I found her.

Overall she is in decent shape, yes the gel coat is faded and the interior needs trimmed but the hull is good and it seems to have been a tidy boat before it was neglected for so long. The canvas hadnt been on it in a few years either and is in excellent condition. It was inside the cabin out of harms way. This is how she arrived last Tuesday.

Managed to get the cover on and start and dry her out as there was actual plant life inside with being exposed for so long. Here is a few pics after a wash down and then I made a start on the oxidised gel coat. Its coming up well, but its taking some work!

The cabin was dry which makes sorting in there a bit easier, plenty of mould but nothing a quick clean with some mould remover couldnt sort. The cushions are being recovered as they are a bit faded and threadbare. The floor carpet is also being changed as it was long past its best.

Not my best angle above :)

Thats pretty much it so far, im juggling it with another 80's sunseeker project so I really just need more hours in the day to make good progress! Managed to get get power to everything yesterday and all seems to work, trim, gauges, etc. The starter is due this week, along with a service kit for the engine and a new impeller. Would really like to hear her run, and if the flywheel needs changed at least i can remove and refit with the promise of a good engine at the end of it!

Thanks

many thanks for the kind comments. Its more a tidy up and fix the flywheel/starter issue but sure, keeps me busy.

The outdrive is in good condition, just had a lot of sealife living on it! i have it all cleaned up now.
The previous owner spent around £1800 on her a year ago doing various small jobs, including bellows and service of the leg. It just never made it off the trailer again.

Waiting on my starter coming this week, so hopefully my next update is a running v8 :)

well iv done some work on this over the past few days, managed to get the stern drive removed, separated, cleaned up and new impeller kit fitted.

Also had a go at getting the engine out. Unfortunately one of the back mount bolts didn't want to play ball. The captive nut started to spin on one side. From what im reading online it seems to be a steel bolt and aluminium nut, hence why its stuck solid. Spent a good few hours on Saturday drilling the head of the bolt. Its in a really awkward position in this boat.

Also had to cut the shroud, there was no other way to get it out. Its a clean cut so I may hinge the extra part or glass it back in when im done.

Voilaaaaaa! Out she popped..... at 1am. They are one heavy brute of an engine, hopefully going back in is easier!

forgot to add, I also had her running! yay!

Fitted the starter and she fired up, albeit with a bit of a fight! The flywheel is absolutely knackered! I have a video but unsure how to upload it.

so, small update so far as I have been waiting on parts.

Interior is completely retrimmed, just to do the lighting before the side panels go back on.

The engine has been cleaned down, and painted with a fresh coat of gloss black. Very dry thankfully, no oil leaks anywhere :)

New bolts for the rear bellhousing mounts arrived along with all my new gaskets for the sterndrive and the risers. The hold up was the flywheel itself. The first one turned up with a tooth half broken off so the company had to send another which turned up yesterday.
Hopefully get it on tonight and engine and drive back together this weekend!

Found the torque settings online also so im ready to go!
