Not wanting to hijack the 'Tablet' thread-

I have MX Mariner on my Android Xoom from the free apps and it has the baseline world map. I have tried to get it to find my registered MMap charts but failed.

Some peeps here have hinted at OpenCPN on Android too, does this mean those 'for study purposes' CM98(sic) charts can be loaded and if so how and can they be seen by MX?

Secondly, what am I missing when some say MX Mariner is a top flight nav programme? I can't manage to lay even a wpt. (not tried too hard TBH) would I need to upgrade to a non-trial version?

I'm quite happy with MMap on the tablet, not as flexible as the laptop but OK

Nick

I sat up at those reports of OpenCPN on Andtoid, but I think they are inaccurate. If you look at the MX Mariner web site, you'll see that it was developed by the same guys that wrote OpenCPN. I'm guessing that the two share some code, but it is a long way from "OpenCPN on Android". I had been toying with the idea of trying to load the CM93 charts into MX Mariner, but I see no reason to believe that it is possible.

The word you are looking for is 'stolen'.

Umm, it was me that mentioned OpenCPN/mxmariner.
In New Zealand the entire Chart set for the country is available as a free download from the government department concerned.(yup free - from a government department!)
I suspect that this is a case of a Govt. department misguidedly thinking that they exist to serve the people. Once their political masters catch on to what they are doing, no doubt they will all be sent to reeducation camps and it will be user pays and pays and pays like everything else.
Meantime these programs do work very well with these chart sets. Sorry i don't know how where you would source charts for the UK.
Good luck

John - for those poor sods in the UK who are persistently precipitated on (coldest wettest spring in 50 years etc), we can only dream of sailing in your area, stopping off at world-class vineyards to restock on essential supplies. Where can we get the NZ charts, so we can plan our escape? (or indulge our fantasies?)

Thanks!

For UK waters, you can buy the admiralty charts from within the MX Mariner app for about £4. Its amazing value, I bought a couple of areas. Making routes and waypoints is done using the three vertical dots button. You can also import gpx routes from opencpn.

Do you know if the Uk charts are included in the £4.99 app price or an extra. I used to have the Navionics app. but need to purchase again for my new android. Thinking about mxmariner as is raster and not vector charts. but i have read it does not have route planner.

Does anybody know if it is possible to obtain, and I do not mind paying, charts for MX Mariner that cover France, Spain and Belgium?

Not from MXMariner directly - this is their map of supported areas:

However, "Most BSB version 2 and 3 charts can be imported into the MX Mariner chart region format using your PC." (http://mxmariner.com/mxcart.html, to which there seems to be no clickable route from the MxMariner homepage). I completely failed to get it to convert the Antares charts, though.

I succeeded in converting Antares charts using MXCart. The first effort failed but that wasn't obvious. The second attempt took several hours but it did keep showing encouraging signs every few minutes. The converted files are near 1Gb. If you are interested, I could attempt to make them available.
