This is a recording of the VHF conversation of the MV 'Server' and Fedje VTS in western Norway. The ship was on passage from Norway to Murmansk and went aground spilling some 500 tonnes of fuel oil etc. The clip is heavily editied to cut out the gaps in transmission, but despite repeated warnings the master failed to take the recommendations of the VTS into account and ran the ship aground.

The one thing that amazes me is the radio procedure of the master once the grounding has occured. Presumably a man of many years experience at sea?

FYI, a 180m bulk carrier with 25 crew onboard, (Greek officers and Indonesian crew), Cypriot flagged. All crew were safely airlifted ashore.

The entire VHF conversation can be heard here:

It's very long and includes other local (Norwegian) traffic, but the mayday is included as well.

Wow!

Fedje is an exposed island north of Bergen (with some very fine catfish fishing), I'm horrified by the incident especially the radio procedure of MV Server

Rogaland Radio sound a bit laid back!

The authorities have handled the spill incident very badly by all accounts with the locals doing the work initially. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Terrible, terrible incident.

Hello Dyflin,
and hello all of you!

Ich hope you could help me.
Thanks to your "hint" about MV Server, it came that I now want to analyse the VHF transcript in the context of my diploma thesis. I think the misunderstandings here and in other conversation are highly interesting.

My problem is: where could I find more VHF radio communications?

I do not want that transcript to be the sole centre of my investigation. I rather plan to do also a quantitative analysis.

Does anyone have a recommendation where to look? Please, answer, if you've got a clue....

Thanks!
