MV Balmoral, 'hampered by extreme weather'

She has always been diesel - the original engines were by Thornycroft, who also built her. I'll guess that they had a solid-fuel stove for heating somewhere.

You're making me rack my brains to see if I've got the wrong ship, but it still keeps coming up with 'Balmoral'!

It was 1996 (rather than 1990) ...... that's just a careless typo.

My memory is of being shown around, including the boiler, and told about the special high temperature Scottish coal that they burned. They also had a gory story, of blood and guts, when the plating on the boiler failed many years before.

So....it obviously can't have been the Balmoral that we lay alongside (if she's always been diesel fired).

and I'm sure it wasn't the Waverley.

Can anyone help with suggestions of the vessel that we did lie alongside?
